Literacy Partners “Food for Thought” Luncheon
to Raise Awareness of Adult Illiteracy
On October 5, Literacy Partners,
New York’s only accredited adult literacy program, kicked
off their second annual Food for Thought Luncheon
series. The intimate event featured a Q&A
with Lauren Weisberger,
bestselling author of Last
Night at Chateau Marmont
and The Devil Wears Prada, hosted by renowned
columnist Liz Smith.
Smith, an
Honorary Chair of Literacy Partners, led a
lively conversation with Weisberger discussing Weisberger’s
writing methods, what it was like to
have her well-known novel come to life on the “big screen,” impending
motherhood and her love for New York.
During her colorful talk with
Liz Smith,
Weisberger explained, “During interviews, I can always tell who’s
read Last Night at
Chateau Marmont
and who hasn’t. When a host says, ‘After writing three
books about New York, you’ve finally written about
California,’
then I know they haven’t even opened the cover.
I always reply, ‘Nope, sorry, this one is about New York
City too!’”
Literacy Partners other Honorary Chair, Jacqueline Weld
Drake, is chairing the luncheons, all of which are being
held at the legendary New York restaurant Le Cirque.
Luncheon Committee members in attendance included Yanna
Avis,
Barbara Bancroft, Patricia Beard, Kathryn
McGraw Berry, Jill Blanchard,
Vera Blinken, Martha Bograd Barrett Frelinghuysen,
Jacqueline M. Garrett, Sharon Handler, Lois
Nasser, Molly Schaefer, Joan Steinberg,
Adrienne Vittadini and Kristi Witker.
The event was also attended by Literacy
Partners Chairman Mark Jackson,
Executive Director Susan McLean, and Board Members Peter
Brown, John Josephson, Sharon King Hoge and
Parker Ladd.
The
women of wowOwow.com, including Hilary Black
and Joni Evans, lent support to the event.
Notable New Yorkers Coco Kopelman, MaryAnne Kristel, Enid
Nemy and Peggy Siegal were also present at the
luncheon.
The next Literacy Partners
Food for Thought author event will take place on
February 8, 2011, featuring
Wally Lamb,
author of The Hour I First Believed
and two Oprah’s Book Club picks: She’s Come Undone
and
I Know This Much Is True.
