The Founding
Board of
Trustees,
representing
both The
World Water
Organization
(WWO)and The
World Energy
Forum (WEF),
has
announced
the creation
of the
Energy and
Water
Institute of
New York (EWI).
The new
university
will work
closely with
the United
Nations and
the World
Bank to
train
experts for
their Member
States on
global
issues
involving
energy,
water, and
the
environment.
EWI is to
offer Master
of Science
(MS), Ph.D.
and
certificate
programs in
the areas of
energy,
water, and
environment.
EWI will be
a pioneering
center for
global
research and
graduate
education in
energy,
water, and
environment,
with the
mission of
training new
experts to
create a
sustainable
future for
all
humanity.
The
University
will be
world’s
first
institution
devoted
exclusively
to the
multidisciplinary
approach to
the study of
energy,
water, and
environment.
The
University
will be a
not-for-profit
educational
institution,
chartered by
the Board of
Regents of
the
University
of the State
of New York,
and the main
campus will
be located
in the City
of New York.
This
University
will be
supported by
a
combination
of
government
and private
grants and
contracts,
private
philanthropy,
student
tuition and
income from
the
endowment.
This new
University
is created
under the
following
raison
d’ętre:
-
Energy,
water,
and
environment
are the
greatest
themes
of our
time and
we need
to find
answers
through
specialized
research
and
train
experts
who will
lead the
governments
and
industry.
-
The
issues
of
energy,
water,
and
environment
are
interrelated
and
answers
cannot
be found
isolated
under
traditional
compartmentalized
disciplines
and we
need a
holistic
multidisciplinary
approach
to these
studies
and
research.
-
The
world
needs
not just
technical
competence
but also
a
broader
understanding
of the
business,
policy,
economics,
and
political
aspects
of
energy,
water,
and
environment.
-
Energy,
water,
and
environment
transcend
local
concerns
and they
are
truly
global
and
planetary
issues
which
necessitate
a
university
that
studies
and
researches
the
issues
in a
global
context.
-
Energy
and
water
are core
issues
for
world
development
and
elimination
of
extreme
poverty,
for
which
this
university
will
cooperate
with the
United
Nations
and the
World
Bank in
order to
help
achieve
the UN
Millennium
Development
Goals.
