On July 12, 2011, the Global Partnerships Forum (GPF)
and the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United
Nations co-hosted a series of roundtables and a
reception in honor of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of
Maldives, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Naseem. The day’s
events were focused on exploring opportunities for
economic growth and social development in Maldives. The
first of two roundtables brought together leaders from
foundations, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the
Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations, and
a delegation of business and political leaders from
Maldives to discuss how foundations can assist Maldives
in strengthening its judiciary and legal system,
revising its tax regime, and empowering its youth. The
conversation also centered on strengthening Maldivian
multi-party democracy, which triumphed in 2008 after
years of dictatorship.
The second roundtable
convened business executives and the aforementioned
representatives of Maldives to explore investing in
Maldives. Potential areas of investment include
construction, medical tourism, and ecotourism.
Moreover, Maldives hopes to develop a clean energy
sector, as it is a pioneer in sustainable development
and aims to be carbon neutral by 2020.
Following the conclusion of the roundtables, a reception
was hosted for His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Naseem to
celebrate Maldivian democracy and economic development,
as well as the beginning of successful partnerships with
foundations and businesses.
