PERFORMERS IN NEW YORK CITY

– On Sunday, September 23rd,
South-South News hosted the
2012 South-South Awards at the
Waldorf-Astoria during the
High-Level Segment of this year’s 67th
Session of the United Nations General
Assembly.
Acclaimed film and
television star Laura Prepon
served as Mistress of Ceremonies for an
evening honoring international leaders,
celebrities and musicians who have made
significant contributions to the
implementation of e-governance and
sustainable tourism through policy and
program initiatives.
The evening kicked off
with a cocktail reception, where The
Honourable Dr. W. Baldwin Spencer,
Prime Minster of Antiqua and Barbuda;
H.E Ambassador Francis Lorenzo,
President of South-South News; and
Dr. Hamadoun I. Toure, ITU
Secretary-General, organizers of the
2012 South-South Awards, greeted VIP
guests including honoree Dr. NC
Dlamini Zuma, African Union
Chairperson; Russell Simmons;
President Olusegun Obasanjo,
Nigeria; baseball legend Sammy Sosa;
performer Don Felder; honoree
Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes;
performer Miri Ben-Ari; honoree
Mr. Chen Feng, Founder and
Chairman of HNA Group; Miss Haiti
International; Professor Han
Demin of China; Sharon Bush;

Mildred
Espinoza ,
General Manager of South-South News and Ambassador of
Tourism for Guatemala moderated a pre-ceremony press
conference Mr. Chen Feng and Governor David Paterson. Feng
was honored with the Corporate Social Responsibility Award
for the “HNA Brightness Action” program, which
performs in the funding and delivery of treatment to more
than 50,000 patients with cataracts in China, Cambodia,
Inner Mongolia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.
The
evening continued with an awards ceremony, presentation and
series of performances in the Grand Ballroom. Recipients of
the 2012 South-South Awards for Global Governance
Leadership were: H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf,
President of Liberia; H.E. Michael Chilufya Sata,
President of Zambia; Right Honourable Thomas Thabane,
Prime Minster of Lesotho; Dr. NC Dlamini Zuma,
African Union Chairperson. Honorees of the
2012 South-South Awards were: H.E. Mr. Abdelaziz
Bouteflika, President of Algeria; H.E. Mr. Freundel
Stuart, Prime Minister of Barbados; H.E. Mr. Jacob
Zuma, President of South Africa; H.E. Sheikh Khalifa
Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, President of the United Arab
Emirates; H.E. Mr. Hose Eduardo Dos Santos, President
of Angola; H.E. Mr. James Michel, President of
Seychelles; H.E, Mr. Navin Ramgoolam, Prime Minister
of Mauritius; H.E. Mr. Ricardo Martinelli Berrocal,
President of Panama; and H.E. Mr. Jose Mujica,
President of Uruguay.
Mr. Chen
Feng ,
Chairman of HNA Group, and Professor Han Demin were
the recipients of the 2012 South-South Awards for
Corporate Social Responsibility. Miss Universe
2011 Leila Lopes was honored with the Sustainable
Tourism Award, and five-time Grammy Award-Winner
Gilberto Santa Rosa was honored with a Lifetime
Culture Achievement Award for his use of music as an
instrument to promote culture for development across the
world.
Ambassador Francis Lorenzo ,
President of South-South News and Co-Chair of the
South-South Awards, stated, “The South-South Awards serve as
a platform to highlight the achievements of the Millennium
Development Goals, and this successful eventgave us the
opportunity to celebrate progress for the countries of the
global south.”
Guests
were treated to performances by Don Felder,
world-renowned musician and former lead guitarist for The
Eagles; Angelique Kidjo, Grammy Award-Winning
performer; musician Stephen Bishop; Grammy
Award-Winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari; and Gilberto
Santa Rosa. Entertainment and performances were led by
Music Director Robin DiMaggio.
Among
the guests who left the 2012 South-South Awards impressed
and inspired was Sammy Sosa, who said, “I
congratulate the South-South Awards organizers for putting
together a fantastic event and I look forward to working
with South-South News in leading their Sports for
Development platform for sustainable development.”
