The Plaza Hotel
was the scene of one of Manhattan's most festive annual
charity galas on November 6, where six prominent New
Yorkers were crowned Living Landmarks, including real
estate and publishing tycoon Mortimer Zuckerman,
cosmetics mogul Leonard Lauder, Broadway theatrical
producers Daryl and Jordan Roth, Phoenix House founder
Mitch Rosenthal, and secretive restaurant critic
Gael
Greene. |
They joined the
ranks of many other Living Landmarks so designated over
the years, including fashion designer Mary McFadden,
restaurateur Sirio Maccioni, recording impresario Clive
Davis, actor Joel Grey, librarian extraordinaire Vartan
Gregorian, choreographer Arthur Mitchell, former mayor
David Dinkins, and bandleader Peter Duchin, who got
everyone swinging and singing until the wee hours. |
Hosted by the
indefatigable nonagenarian columnist Liz Smith, who was
aided by her fellow Texan Tommy Tune, the glamorous
benefit was studded with the rich and famous, from art
collector Agnes Gund, arts patroness Adrienne Arsht,
billionaire Pete Peterson, civic force Betsy Gotbaum, PR
guru Howard Rubenstein, and socialite Arie Kopelman to
such philanthropists as Donald and Barbara Tober, Lewis
Cullman, Louise Hirschfeld, Frances Scaife, and Paul
Binder. |
2014 marks the
21st year that this highlight of the social season has
been staged by the redoubtable Peg Breen, and this year
the gala raised over $1.3 million to continue its
support for the remarkable architectural heritage that
makes New York City not only America's most important
metropolis, but also this planet's greatest magnet for
the most talented and influential people on earth. |
