Thursday, April 9, 2015 (Oklahoma
City, OK) -
NBA All-Star MVP and Oklahoma City Thunder Guard, Russell
Westbrook hosted the Fifth
Annual Why Not? Bowl. Proceeds of the event
benefitted the Russell
Westbrook Why Not? Foundation dedicated
to helping the community and at-risk youth. This event
celebrated the foundation’s accomplishments within the past
year including the launch of Russell’s
Reading Room and Russell’s
Reading Challenge. “It’s an honor to be able to see it
unfold. When I first talked about a foundation, we kind of
sat down and had a plan and to see it unfold is a blessing
and is a great thing” said Russell Westbrook.
Partnering with Scholastic, the Why Not?
Foundation launched three Russell’s
Reading Rooms at schools
in the OKC community including North
Highland Elementary School, Martin
Luther King Elementary School, and Eugene
Field Elementary School.
Each reading room is stocked with a total of 1,200 books for
reading levels K-12, stereo CD listening stations, and audio
libraries with fluency CDs. The Why Not? Foundation also
launched Russell’s Reading Challenge where participating OKC
schools compete with each other to read the most minutes for
a chance to win an end-of-the-year school-wide SUBWAY® party
with Russell. Since March 2015, the students have
collectively read more than 738,141 minutes.
The Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation is
dedicated to support
the community through
education and family service programs while encouraging
youth to believe in themselves. The event was presented
by Edmond Hyundai and sponsored by Rupture Pin, Jacob
Bailey, Mountain
Dew, Robert
A. & Marjo Burk,
Sona.A, Tio Chuy’s Auto Sales, Wasserman Foundation, and ZZW
Worldwide.
Oklahoma influencers attended such as
Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder teammates Kevin
Durant, Nick Collison, Serge Ibaka, Enes Kanter, Coach Scott
Brooks, General Manager Sam Presti and
supporters from across the world.
The event was held at AMF Boulevard Lanes,
3501 South Blvd, Edmond, Oklahoma and featured open bowling,
contests, and raffles with donations from Jordan
Brand, Planet Sox, Trapp Candles, 808 Audio, Kings and Jaxs
