The Drama League Annual Gala

The Drama League's Annual Gala epitomizes the fusion of fun-raising and fundraising for early career directors in the theater industry. Leading this charge are Gabriel Stelian Shanks, Artistic Director since 2001; Bonnie Comley, current President and Board Member since 2009; and Bevin Ross, Executive Director since 2019. This triumvirate successfully steered the 107-year-old non-profit through the pandemic, a remarkable feat not achieved by all arts institutions. Balancing the gravity of live performance recovery with a dazzling party, they've given the industry cause for celebration.

The Gala, now rebranded as "Embrace The Season" since 2021, honors legendary theater professionals and showcases long-running and upcoming shows. The one-night-only event raised awareness and united the industry by featuring Broadway mega-hits alongside previews of future successes. Theater legends pay tribute to honorees through inspiring performances, humorous roasts, and heartfelt speeches, making the Drama League Galas a must-attend celebration.

This year's "Embrace The Season" honored Broadway producer Jeffrey Richards, renowned for his acclaimed revival of Purlie Victorious. With a five-decade career, Richards has championed historically excluded artists and delivered noteworthy productions. Established in 1916, the Drama League has played a pivotal role in shaping the theatrical landscape, supporting early career directors through its successful Directors Project. Alumni of the program have directed one-third of all Broadway shows in the past decade.

Drama League Directors boast an impressive track record with 22 Tony Award nominations, nine wins, and numerous other accolades. Over 100 alumni hold leadership positions in theaters worldwide, directing approximately 1,000 productions each season. In November, they gathered with Bonnie Comley, Bevin Ross, and Gabriel Stelian Shanks for the magical spectacle that is The Drama League Gala, a legendary event featuring champagne toasts, singing, and a celebration of the talent that makes live performance extraordinary.
