"Marilyn Clark Langner-
great lady of the American Theatre."
|
Remembering Marilyn Clark Langner:
A Great Lady of the American Theatre
By: Joel Vig |
On June 22, 2024, just a few months
before her 100th birthday,
Marilyn Clark Langner died in her
Central Park West apartment overlooking
the Dakota. |
Born Marilyn Clark on September 28,
1924, in Spokane, Washington, Marilyn
was drawn to the theatre even as a
child. |
|
Marilyn's theatre studies at UCLA, where
she was the student head of the Drama
Department, gave Marilyn the training
and confidence to move to New York City
to pursue a theatrical career. |
THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, starring Tom Ewell,
gave Marilyn
her first Broadway break. |
|
Also in the cast was Gena Rowlands,
who became a life long friend.
Gena Rowland's husband, John
Cassavetes, would go on to write and
direct a number of films which Gena
and Marilyn would be featured in.
|
|
Marilyn met, fell in love with, and
married Philip Langner, the only
child of Theatre Guild founder
Lawrence Langner and his wife,
Armina Marshall. Lawrence Langner
and Armina Marshall are considered
the giants of the American Theatre.
For the rest of her life, Marilyn
Clark Langner was in the epicenter
of the American Theatre
In the late 1970's, Marilyn and
Philip Langner and Armina Marshall
created Theatre At Sea, which
brought legendary stars to perform
theatrical evenings on cruise ships
around the world. Not only did the
passengers on board ships enjoy
these evenings, but many of these
plays then moved to Broadway,
Off- Broadway, and theatres around
the country.
