In the heart of Times Square, over 200
artists, board members, and supporters
gathered to celebrate the 30th
anniversary of ChaShaMa, the pioneering
arts organization founded by Anita
Durst. The event served as a vibrant
reunion, honoring three decades of
providing affordable creative space for
artists across New York City.
Since 1995, ChaShaMa has transformed
unused spaces into thriving studios,
galleries, and performance venues.
Addressing the crowd, Durst reflected on
the organization’s enduring mission.
“ChaShaMa has always been about ensuring
artists have the space to create and
share their work,” she said. “This
community is a testament to that
vision.”
The evening featured dynamic
performances, installations, and
projections that celebrated the
contributions of current and former
ChaShaMa artists. Guests enjoyed a
retrospective video showcasing the
organization’s impactful legacy and the
stories of artists whose careers were
shaped by its support. The reunion was
also a space for connection, with
artists exchanging stories and forging
new collaborations.
Looking ahead, Durst and her team remain
committed to expanding ChaShaMa’s reach
and continuing to empower artists.
The energy of the evening made one thing
clear
— ChaShaMa’s legacy is thriving, and its
future is bright.
