The Global Foundation for Eating Disorders (GFED)
is pleased to announce the appointment of Sangita Karra as
its new Executive Director. Sangita will oversee GFED’s
efforts to eliminate eating disorders through the funding of
research, awareness and education. She will work in
partnership with business leaders, researchers and
clinicians who are committed to helping the estimated 30
million Americans who struggle with an eating disorder at
some point in their lives –
1 of every 10 people.
Sangita brings over a decade of nonprofit
experience to GFED, most recently serving as the Director of
Philanthropy for Heifer International, a $130 million
international nonprofit providing agricultural solutions to
end poverty and hunger in over 30 countries. She was
formerly the Chief Development Officer for Pratham USA, the
largest educational NGO in India. At Pratham USA, she
worked with 14 regional volunteer chapters across the
country to raise $11 million in funds annually. Earlier in
her career, she served as the Director of Planned Giving for
the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a $250 million
nonprofit organization and world leader in relief,
rehabilitation, protection, post-conflict development,
resettlement services and advocacy for those uprooted or
affected by violent conflict and oppression.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors of GFED,
I am delighted to welcome Sangita” said Board Chair Leah
Komar Harris. “These are exciting times for us and Sangita’s
wealth of experience and demonstrated leadership in serving
those in need will contribute to GFED’s mission to eliminate
eating disorders. There is so much opportunity and we look
forward to making significant inroads toward curing these
horrible diseases.”
“GFED works with an extraordinary team of
scientists applying cutting edge advances in neuroscience
and technology. GFED’s scientists are not only helping us
understand the elusive neurobiology of eating disorders but
they are also breaking down barriers to developing and
disseminating the most effective treatments.” said Sangita.
“I feel strongly that GFED’s commitment to investing in
research is our best hope at tackling the prevalence of
eating disorders around the world.”
