Romeo and Juliet Opens on Broadway
International film star Orlando Bloom has
been heating up the inside of the Richard Rogers Theater and
hundreds of his fans have been blocking traffic on the
streets on West 46th street outside the stage door for
several weeks of previews but the show opened on Thursday,
September 19th and the crowd is under control for this very
limited run. This version of the classic tale retains
Shakespeare's original language but a modern setting in
which the rival families (the Montagues and the Capulets)
are white and black. It is required reading in most schools
and if you don't take your teenage daughters and grand
daughters to see this one, they may never forgive you! It
features a shirtless Bloom, a panting Rashad, a motorcycle,
balloons, flames shooting out over a wall of graffiti and
terrific acting. The show runs through January 12th.
Romeo and Juliet stars Orlando Bloom (Pirates
of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings) and two-time Tony
Award nominee Condola Rashad (Stick Fly, The Trip to
Bountiful) and ,although, Bloom is happily married to
supermodel Miranda Kerr , the on stage chemistry between
Bloom and Rashad has been gossip fodder for the internet.
This is the first Broadway revival of Romeo and Juliet in 36
years. Considered by many as the greatest love story of all
time, this stunningly modern production from five-time Tony
nominee David Leveaux includes the acclaimed cast of 25
featuring Tony Award winners Brent Carver (Kiss of the
Spider Woman), Chuck Cooper (The Life), two-time Tony
nominee Jayne Houdyshell (Follies) and Christian Camargo (All
My Sons).
Guests attending the star studded opening
included: Miranda Kerr, Sir Ian McKellan, Spike Lee, Liev
Schreiber, Al Roker, Mamie Gummer, Tyra Banks, Phylicia
Rashad, Terry Allen Kramer and her grand daughter Brianne
Goutal, James & Charlene Nederlander, James & Margo
Nederlander, Stewart Lane, Bonnie Comley, Sawyer Avery,
Deborah Cox, Constantine Maroulis, and Jordon Roth, among
others.
