Honored at 2013 South-South Awards Gala
NEW YORK –
On Sunday, September 22nd South-South
News hosted the 2013
South-South Awards during the 68th session of
the United Nations General Assembly. The evening honored
governments, organizations, and individuals who have made
significant contributions to the South-South cooperation and
sustainable development.
Ambassador John
Ashe, President of the United Nations General Assembly,
greeted more than 700
guests including Ambassador and Head of South-South
News Francis Lorenzo,
the Prime Minister of Antigua and Bermuda Baldwin
Spencer, Naomi
Campbell, the Prime Minister of Fiji Frank
Bainimarama and His
Holiness Gyalwang Drupka.
Now in it’s
third year, the South-South Awards honored former South
Africa President Nelson
Mandela and his wife Madame
Graca Machel for their Humanitarian Achievements.
Daughter Zindzi Mandela and
daughter-in-law Josina
Machel accepted on their behalf.
Hosted by Miss
USA Erin Brady, the
awards recognized Performer and Composer David
Paich of Toto with
a Lifetime Achievement Award while the “Princess of Africa” Yvonne
Chaka Chaka and Grammy nominated duo Les
Nubians performed during the ceremony.
