Education For Employment (EFE) has brought
together over 1,150 companies from around the
world to create economic opportunity for
unemployed youth in the Middle East and North
Africa by employing EFE graduates, supporting
EFE programs, and building the capacity and
reach of the EFE Network. Consolidated
Contractors Company (CCC) served as EFE’s first
employer partner, hiring graduates in Palestine
in 2006 and subsequently employing EFE graduates
from Jordan, Yemen and Tunisia. Through its
$3.15 million partnership with EFE, The
MasterCard Foundation is enabling EFE to link
15,500 unemployed, disadvantaged young Moroccans
to education, employment and civic engagement
opportunities, and is enabling EFE to develop
learning and performance tracking best practices
that will inform activities across the EFE
Network and youth employment field.

Plenary: Creating Jobs for our 21st Century
Workforce
Nearly 85 percent of young job seekers live in
developing countries, where youth unemployment
and under-employment rates are at the highest on
record, and young people are more than four
times as likely to be out of work compared with
older workers. This gap between the global youth
labor supply and actual market demand presents
one of the greatest economic challenges for the
next generation. How can we forge strategic
links between our strongest employers,
policymakers and youth-focused nonprofits to
best prepare young people to take the reins in
major industries and emerging fields? In
regional pockets plagued by chronic youth
unemployment in the United States, the Middle
East and Europe, visionaries are launching smart
initiatives, developing youth training programs
in tandem with the needs of fast-growth markets-
the question is: can we scale these examples to
affect real change in the labor market?
Global leaders from each sector will discuss
workable strategies for reversing global youth
unemployment trends and building new modes for
job placement.

THE 2013
ANNUAL
CONCORDIA SUMMIT
September
26th and 27th, 2013 at the New York Stock Exchange
and the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City.
. The 2013 Summit focused on the following theme:
Building a Prosperous Future: Investing in
our Youth
More than any other demographic, young people
have the greatest potential to drive innovation and economic
growth. Accounting for a third of the world’s population,
they possess the capacity to create new paradigms of global
prosperity and to solve many of the seemingly intractable
challenges of this emergent century. They can only
meaningfully wield their power, however, if given the proper
tools and opportunity. With more than 500 million young
people living on less than two dollars a day, and with all
of today’s youth facing economic, social, and environmental
challenges unlike any generation before, the need for
targeted and strategic investment in this group has never
been more urgent. This year’s Summit convened the private,
public, and nonprofit sectors to partner on creating
innovative solutions and bringing existing initiatives to
scale to serve our young population. Attendees will hear key
insights from leading experts from around the world and
participate in closed-door, peer-to-peer discussions on how
to leverage the strength of public-private partnerships
(P3s) to empower
our next generation of global citizens.
CONCORDIA
SUMMIT BREAKOUTS
Solutions for Stability: Beyond the
Traditional Security Model
Increasing globalization, technological development, and
population growth dually present immense opportunities for
advancement, and complex challenges to local, national, and
global security. Between 2007-2012, the number of global
internet connections doubled, mostly due to infrastructural
investments in developing nations. At
the same
time, the U.S. federal government reported a 680% increase
in cyber attacks in the
past six years. Can we maintain the benefits of rapid
growth and innovation while reducing vulnerability? In the
21st century and beyond, the global community will encounter
unique obstacles
related to our shifting environment. Addressing
pandemics, climate change, cross-cultural conflict, and cyber
threats requires resilient thinking. How can the private
sector best leverage its products for public benefit? What
role does the citizen play in the new paradigm of global
security? Key
experts will share experiences from the field and strategize
with participants to develop flexible responses to new
security threats.
Forging the Path Toward an Inclusive Financial Sector
Around 2.5 billion people worldwide are not account holders
at a formal financial institution. Among the larger unbanked,
uninsured population, youth aged 15-24 are 33% less likely
to hold a bank account and 40% less likely to save formally.
Innovators around the world are making great
strides toward bringing simple, low-cost financial
services and education programs to the unbanked. Mobile
banking products serve millions of rural Kenyans, local
micro-credit organizations help small businesses expand, and
financial institutions lead the way in many large U.S. cities
by providing free bank accounts to low-income populations.
Financial inclusion and literacy interventions
identify asset building as a trigger
for long-term productivity and earnings potential;
when enacted from an
early age, these effects multiply powerfully. What
can governments,
financial institutions, and educators do to remove
barriers preventing
full participation for youth in the financial sector?
Leaders will cover methods for delivering innovative
financial
services for young people, and through interaction,
will generate new ideas to inspire life-long economic
security.
Solutions for Stability: Beyond the Traditional Security
Model
Innovations in Education: New Developments in the Classroom
Preparing young
people for a changing job landscape must begin with
disruptive education models. Developed nations cannot
produce enough graduates in the science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM) fields to meet growing demand,
despite the fact that these careers pay between 26-40% more
than jobs in other fields. Can our classrooms transform into
practical incubators for training a skilled workforce? In
the next
five years, over 60% of jobs will require
post-secondary training or education. Given this precedent,
which education strategies will place students on a pathway
for success, beginning in early childhood? Recent
developments in education illustrate the power of bringing
private-sector
Innovation into the classroom; from Massive Open
Classroom Courses and open-source learning, to corporate
training programs and technical development for teachers,
investing in the education
system produces wide cross-sector benefits. Which
interventions will best engage children and parents to
aggressively narrow the achievement gap?
Pioneers in the education space will explore emerging
methods for transforming the school system with
participants, focusing on innovations at the intersection.
Youth Entrepreneurship: Supporting Tomorrow’s
Business Leaders
Currently, small
to medium enterprises create 50% of employment opportunities
in most major economies and represent the strongest area for
future job growth. Over the last 20 years, small businesses
created 75% of new jobs in the United States. Young people
are at the helm of many
of the world’s most successful start-ups: between 2011-2012,
18-34 year olds exhibited the highest rates of
entrepreneurial activity and comprised 50% of the
entrepreneurial pool. In order to maintain momentum in
high-growth sectors, young business owners need critical
support, including access to capital, technical services,
and amenable business policies. Which tools will empower
young people to become tomorrow’s executives and innovators?
Can our core education systems foster entrepreneurial
spirits in collaboration with key private sector
input?Thought leaders will discuss financing mechanisms and
training models for supporting emerging entrepreneurs, with
participants working together to develop practical means to
launch initiatives |

Our mission is to promote effective and sustainable
public-private partnerships (P3s) by convening global
leaders and developing new methods of research and
intelligence. Concordia identifies new avenues of
collaboration for governments, businesses, and nonprofits
while also facilitating investment and fostering
public-private partnerships, to create a more prosperous and
secure future. |
IN
THE SUMMER OF 2011, FRIENDS AND BUSINESS PARTNERS
NICK LOGOTHETIS AND MATT SWIFT
had an idea for convening a group of
thought leaders in the midst of the 10th anniversary of 9/11
to discuss
the importance of partnerships in
combating extremism. The organization has since grown
towards a belief and vision that public-private partnerships
are a fundamental tool to addressing many societal
challenges. Concordia recognizes that cross-sector
collaboration is fundamental. With the absence of
collaboration and partnership, communities are unable to
address the issues that ensure sustainability.
THE CONCORDIA SUMMIT IS NOT JUST A YEARLY
SUMMIT.
It is a young but energetic
organization committed to putting new and innovative ideas
about public-private partnerships (P3s) into action – all
year long. The growing awareness of the importance of P3s
and the mutual benefits of them for all stakeholders is
growing. The Concordia Summit aims to be a thought leader
around the singular notion that in order to address the
world’s most pressing issues threatening the stability of
communities, public and private entities must work together
to leverage their respective resources towards a common
goal. In the years to come, The Concordia Summit will work
to be a partner, advocate and convening platform for those
public and private groups looking to start or build upon
existing partnerships.
“In our ever-connected and co-dependent world, collaboration
between the private and public sectors is relevant today
more than ever.”
Nick Logothetis and Matt Swift, Concordia
