ACCESS, the
American Jewish
Committee’s New
Generation
Program,
will hold its
annual Chanukah
Celebration on
Monday, December
15 at the
landmark De
Lamar Mansion,
home to The
Consulate
General of The
Republic of
Poland in New
York, located at
233 Madison
Avenue at 37th
Street.
ACCESS is the
American Jewish
Committee’s emerging
leadership
division,
representing
some
of the future
leaders of the
American Jewish
community. The
tone of ACCESS
is smart,
informal and
engaged with
international
relations
broadly. The
event will focus
on the holiday
of Chanukah, the
Jewish festival
of lights, and
will afford an
opportunity to
meet dynamic and
involved young
New York
professionals in
a warm, friendly
atmosphere. We
will be lighting
the candles
together
(practicing –
the holiday
starts a few
days later)
and
sharing songs
over drinks and
light
refreshments.
Doors open at
6:30 pm and
festivities
start at 7:00
pm.
Consul General
Krzysztof W.
Kasprzyk will
welcome guests
to the
magnificent De
Lamar Mansion
now residence of
the Consulate
General of The
Republic of
Poland,
considered one
of the finest
examples of
Beaux Arts
architecture
by
Charles
Pierrepont Henry
Gilbert
in 1902.
This Beaux-Arts
mansion, the
largest in
Murray Hill and
one of the
grandest in all
of New York, was
designed for the
Dutch-born
maritime Captain
and copper mogul
who made his
fortune in the
California Gold
Rush, Joseph
Rafael De Lamar.
In 1918, the
mansion was sold
to the American
Bible Society,
and in 1923 the
National
Democratic Club
purchased it for
its
headquarters. In
1973, Poland
bought the
Mansion, which
was then in bad
disrepair and
called for
immediate
renovation work,
for the new seat
of the Consulate
General of
Poland in New
York. It was
restored to its
present glory
and designated a
landmark by the
New York City
Landmarks
Preservation
Commission in
1975.
