NEW YORK, NY: The Anne Frank Center USA
announces that it will hold its 12th
Annual Spirit of Anne Frank Awards on
Thursday, June 12, 2008 (Anne’s
birthday). The Gala Event includes a
reception, silent auction, dinner and
awards ceremony. The Spirit of Anne
Frank Awards recognize worthy students,
educators and citizens who participate
in social and humanitarian programming
to engender understanding, equality, and
mutual respect among diverse groups.
Honorees include Nicholas Kristof,
Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times
correspondent, columnist and advocate
for human rights, and Richard E.
Witten, whose foundation provides
primary funding to deliver HIV and TB
care in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A
$10,000 scholarship will be awarded to
Sharlene Green, a graduating
senior in the Conflict Resolution
Program at Susan E. Wagner High School,
Staten Island, NY. Spirit of Anne Frank
Educator Awards recipients are
Nicholas E. Coddington of the
Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, WA,
who designed a Holocaust Remembrance
Week with a fellow teacher in Poland;
Dr. Marilyn J. Harran, a noted
Holocaust educator at Chapman University
in Orange, CA; and Eileen Shapiro,
Program Planner for Holocaust Studies,
Palm Beach County, FL, public schools.
Outstanding Student Awards go to
Gabrielle Meirav Flaum, Millburn
High School, Millburn, NJ, and
Nastasha Lauren Pollard, North
Rockland High School, Thiels, NY.
A live auction will include a rare copy
of Het Achterhuis, the first
edition of Anne Frank’s diary published
in Amsterdam in 1947, one of only 1,500
copies printed. It was sold at Bauman
Rare Books in 2006 for $10,500.
The Spirit of Anne Frank Awards Dinner,
Auction and Awards Ceremony featuring
music provided by The Jazz Museum in
Harlem All-Stars begins at 6 p.m.,
Thursday, June 12, 2008, at The Pierre
Hotel, 2 East 61 Street (between Fifth
and Madison avenues),
New York City.
The Anne Frank Center USA, a partner
organization of the Anne Frank House,
uses the diary and spirit of Anne Frank
as unique tools to advance her legacy,
to educate young people and communities
about the consequences of intolerance,
racism and discrimination, and to
inspire the next generation to build a
world based on mutual respect. In 2008,
the AFC USA is celebrating its 30th
anniversary.
