On Friday, August 8th
at 5:30pm the LongHouse Reserve
in East Hampton, NY will host a
Conversation with Chuck Close
led by Terrie Sultan, Director
of the Parrish Art Museum. The
artist’s talk will be followed
by a wine reception on the
LongHouse grounds. A small
intimate dinner with Chuck
Close, Terrie Sultan and Jack
Lenor Larsen limited to forty
people will follow the wine
reception.
The remarkable career of artist
Chuck Close extends beyond his
completed works of art. More
than just a painter,
photographer, and printmaker,
Close is a builder who, in his
words, builds "painting
experiences for the viewer."
Highly renowned as a painter,
Close is also a master
printmaker, who has, over the
course of more than 30 years,
pushed the boundaries of
traditional printmaking in
remarkable ways.
In 2003 Terrie Sultan organized
“Chuck Close Prints: Process and
Collaboration,” the seminal
exhibition exploring this key
aspect of Close’s creative
process. As Close told her
“Every innovation in my
paintings has come about as a
direct result of something I
discovered in making a print.”
During the research and
development of the exhibition
and publication, curator and
artist had many opportunities to
discuss a range of topics
related to art, and especially
the complex and collaborative
nature of printmaking. For the
conversation held at LongHouse
Reserve, Sultan and Close will
engage in an interview style
dialogue intended to illuminate
Close’s approach to art-making
and how painting, photography,
and printmaking inform his work.
Terrie Sultan brings more than
twenty years’ experience to the
directorship of The Parrish Art
Museum, having served in senior
positions at the New Museum of
Contemporary Art in New York,
the Corcoran Gallery of Art in
Washington, DC, and most
recently at the Blaffer Gallery,
the Art Museum of the University
of Houston.
