The latest findings on women’s
health issues and new advances in preventing, detecting and
treating diseases in women were presented in late January
during Palm Beach’s second annual “A Woman’s Journey”
symposium sponsored by Johns Hopkins Medicine. The five
hour conference took place at the Raymond F. Kravis Center’s
Cohen Pavilion.
Approximately 250 conference
attendees listened to Johns Hopkins doctors and specialists
discuss new medical treatments and important health issues
facing women, such as: diet that contributes to the
development of cancer, digestive health, combating aging,
how to achieve healthy skin, heart disease, potential risks
and side effects of mixing medications, and preserving
memory.
Keynote
speaker for the event was Kristina M.
Johnson, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for
Academic Affairs at The Johns Hopkins University, who shared
her personal journey from engineering student to one of the
nation’s top academic posts.
She is Johns Hopkins University’s 12th
provost and the first woman to hold this position at
Hopkins. Also,
this year’s luncheon speaker was Donna Jackson
Nakazawa, a nationally renowned author, whose recent book
focuses on the evidence that modern lifestyles, diet and
environmental chemicals have created the ripest possible
conditions for rising rates of nearly 100 diseases
classified as autoimmune disorders that affect one out of
every nine women.
“A Woman’s Journey” is the
creation of two women from Baltimore, Md., Harriet Legum and
Mollye Block, who together realized the need to provide
women with a forum to gain knowledge about their health
concerns. Lee Callahan, Susan Keenan, Betsy Meany, Susan
Telesco and Norma Tiefel were co-chairs of the Palm Beach
event.
Sponsors for the conference
were Lydian Bank and Trust, Patrick M. Park and Ritz-Carlton
Residences, Inner Harbor, Baltimore. Tiffany Kenney, anchor
for WPBF TV 25, emceed the luncheon.
