League For
Educational Awareness of the Holocaust
(LEAH) presented its 2009 Bridge Builder
award to philanthropists Asa-Lena and Per-Olof
Lööf at a gala at the Marriott Boca Raton on
January 18. This is the first time a married
couple has received the annual award. The
gala was chaired by Patti Carpenter.
Honorary Chairs were Charlotte and Morris
Robinson. The presentation of the award was
made by 2008 Bridge Builder honoree,
Yvonne S. Boice.
The League For
Educational Awareness of the Holocaust
(LEAH) is a nonsectarian, not-for-profit
organization
committed solely to teaching children that
Intolerance is Intolerable.
Speaking at
the gala, Robert Alrod, LEAH President said,
The Lööfs are tireless ambassadors for the
promotion of diversity and tolerance. Mrs.
Lööf is an educator and President of the
Swedish Women’s Educational Association
International. Mr. Lööf is an economist by
training and serves as CEO of Kemet
Corporation and Honorary Consul of the
Kingdom of Sweden in Florida.
The horrors
of the past must not be repeated. Educating
the world about genocide and intolerance is
too important to be taken lightly. In times
of economic difficulty this work becomes
even more important. We know all too well,
how economic turmoil was used to spur the
most horrific regime of mankind. This must
never happen again. This is why we will
always be strong supporters of LEAH, said
Per-Olof Lööf accepting the award.
Proceeds
from the Bridge Builder gala will support
LEAH’s
educational programs for children aimed at
eliminating prejudice and hatred using
lessons learned from the Holocaust and other
genocides. LEAH has funded over $1.5 million
for tolerance projects and programs for
youth.
