The 22nd annual Women of Achievement awards gala for Women’s
Project took place at The Rainbow Room’s Pegasus Suite in
Rockefeller Center. It was a beautiful evening with
spectacular views of the stars both outside and inside. Three
women of international distinction were honored for their
extraordinary accomplishments. Kathy Hilton the noted
international philanthropist; Eve Ensler, the world-renowned
playwright and founder of V-day, committed to ending violence
against girls and women; and Vivienne Tam, the incomparably
exquisite fashion designer and entrepreneur. The presenters
were Yoko Ono, Bebe Neuwirth, and Kerry Washington.
Women’s Project was founded in 1878 by Julia Miles. It has
steadily grown as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to
producing and promoting theatre created by women. During its
28 years, Women’s Project has produced over 120 main stage and
450 developmental productions, and published 10 anthologies of
plays by women. In 1998, Women’s Project purchased a historic
building on West 55th Street in Manhattan, making it the first
and only women’s theatre company to have its own stage.
Women’s Project mentors talented artists through its intensive
Directors, Playwrights, and Producers Labs and serves over
3,300 students through Ten Centuries of Women Playwrights, an
award winning curriculum-based arts education program.
Julie Cosby is the Producing Artistic Director. In May WP is
teaming up with Arts World Financial Center to produce Girls
Just Wanna Have Fund$, rich short plays on the subject of
women and wealth (or lack thereof). The works will be
presented at sites throughout the World Financial Center
complex. |
