Volunteers
are being sought to create a “Mile of Pink” on
Saturday, Oct. 3 in the downtown areas of Darien,
New Canaan and Stamford. The one-of-a-kind rally
will have local breast cancer survivors and
supporters stand side by side wearing special “Paint
the Town Pink” T-shirts.
The
90-minute event kicks off Stamford Hospital’s
month-long “Paint the Town Pink” campaign in
recognition of October’s National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. Since 2005, Stamford Hospital has
been joined by community sponsors in Darien, New
Canaan and Stamford to promote breast cancer
awareness and the importance of early detection as
well as comprehensive breast care services available
in these communities.
“The turnout from last year’s first ever Mile of
Pink was more than we expected,” said Liz Manfredo,
Stamford Hospital’s cancer service line
administrator. “This year, we are still encouraging
all breast cancer survivors, their family, friends
and neighbors to take part. The show of unity will
make a powerful statement about surviving breast
cancer and the support that exists within our
communities.”
From 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., Mile of Pink participants
will line the three towns’ most highly trafficked
areas. In Darien, participants will stand in front
of the Darien Playhouse along the Post Road from
Leroy Ave. to Tokeneke Rd. In New Canaan, they will
line up in front of Town Hall on the corner of Elm
St. and Main St. In Stamford, they will show their
support from Veteran’s Park at Atlantic St. to
Bedford St.
