Hillary Dobbs, the
daughter of CNN anchor Lou
Dobbs, did something
unprecedented at the 33rd
annual Hampton Classic
Horse Show in Bridgehampton
from August 24th to the
31st. The beautiful young
equestrian won the three
biggest classes - The
Time Challenge on opening
day, the Grand Prix
qualifier, and the 200K FTI
Grand Prix, a World Cup
Qualifier event, on the
final day. At 20, Dobbs
became the youngest Grand
Prix winner in the Classic’s
33 year history. McLain
Ward, a winner of the
gold medal in Olympic team
show jumping earlier last
month, won the 1998 Grand
Prix as a 22-year-old-but
now Dobbs holds
the title.
The Harvard student and her
winning mount Corlett joined
Olympic medalist Joe Fargis
as the only riders in the
Classic’s history
to follow up a win in the
qualifier with one in the
Grand Prix.
Fargis, who was recently
named to the Show Jumping
Hall of
fame in Tampa, FL,
accomplished the feat in
2005.
Hillary’s parents and
grandmother were on hand
when the Harvard student
rode in the first round in
the jump-odd on the final
Sunday of the prestigious
charity horse show. When she
won, Hillary’s grandmother
had tears exclaiming, “What
a wonderful
girl-she kisses her horses
every day. That kind of sums
up-she has no ego out front.
She’s just wonderful.” Dobbs
said she owed
it all to her mare Corlett,
who had “jumped her heart
out...She’s really a
remarkable horse.”
Over the 33 years the
charitable corporation, the
Hampton Classic Horse Show,
has contributed millions to
the Southampton
Hospital and to other local
equestrian related
charities.
