Mostly Mozart completed
its four week season with the last three symphonies of Mozart. Louis
Langree led the
orchestra in sparkling performances of each of the works. The
program began with Symphony
No. 39 in E-flat major, K.543, It continued with Symphony
No. 40 in G minor, K.550, and after the intermission, it
concluded withSymphony No. 41 in C major, K.551 ("Jupiter").
It was a satisfying end of a splendid series of concerts.
A Meet & Greet was held for Lady
Day, starring Dee
Dee Bridgewater, which will open on October 3 at the Little
Shubert Theatre. Bridgewater performed three songs from the
show, and I eagerly await its opening.
We were invited to a press
conference to announce the agreement between Nederlander
Worldwide Entertainment (NWE) and Shaanxi Qinhuang Grand Theatre
Performing Arts Co. Ltd where The
Legend of Emperor Qin will
be presented in a
new theatre in Xi'an China, adjacent to the Terra Cotta Warriors
and Horses exhibition. NWE will manage and produce the
spectacular production.
We were invited to a media tasting
of a Rosh Hashanah
menu (September 4 - 6) at
the Russian Tea Room, 150 West 57th St. We sampled an
overwhelming array of dishes, all of them delicious. We began
with four appetizers, Borscht, Matzo Ball Soup, Gefilte Fish and
Carrot and Apple Tzimmes. Then four main courses, Salmon and
Leeks, Trout, Pomegranate Braised Beef Brisket and Fried
Chicken. And finally three desserts, Apple Strudel, Sweet Kugel
and Bread Pudding. It was a magnificent meal, and I urge
everyone, Jew and Gentile, not to miss an amazing feast to
celebrate the Jewish New Year. You will remember it forever.

MoMA presents Aug 22-28: The
Student, by Santiago
Mitre, Argentina, 2011, is about a university student caught
up in student politics, and with all types of betrayals and
lies, he becomes a wiser person. On a grant to the Universidad
Nacional Autonima de Mexico, I was surprised how active student
politics were then, and this film realistically captures the
atmosphere that exists today in Latin America. It is a fine debut
feature by the director, with an excellent cast.
MoMA presents Aug 20-26: Old
Cats, Sebastian
Silva and Pedro
Peirano, Chile, 2010, is a powerful film showing an elderly
lady, suffering with episodes of dementia, and her struggle with
her daughter, who schemes to have her turn over her apartment to
her. The acting is wonderful , the dialogue intelligent and the
story is sad, but completely believable.
MoMA presents an on going An
Auteurist History of Film and
I saw Saturday
Night and Sunday Morning, by Karel
Reisz, Great Britain, 1960, a realistic B & W film about
working class life in an industrial city in England, starring a
magnificent Albert
Finney in his
first major film role as a factory worker, leading a dull life
in a gloomy city. Weekends offer him an escape in booze and sex,
but the future looks dim. It is wonderful slice of life,
beautifully acted by the entire cast
