MoMA presented Allan Dwan and the Rise and Decline of the Hollywood Studios June 5-July 8. Sands of Iwo Jima, by Dwan, USA, 1949, has John Wayne as a tough marine training his men for the assault on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. It's a patriotic film, action packed, with a heroic ending of the famous flag raising scene on the island. Silver Lode, by Dwan, USA, 1954, is another typical Western, which has a convoluted story. John Payne, a Dwan favorite, stars in the farfetched plot. Slightly Scarlet, by Dwan, USA, 1956, is an entertaining gangster film with Payne again in the lead, plus two beautiful redheads, Rhonda Fleming and Arlene Dahl. For a change, Payne is less than heroic when he takes over a powerful gang of mobsters and receives his just rewards. Enchanted Island, by Dwan, USA, 1958, lives up to its title when an adorable Jane Powell as a native girl. Until then, it is dull tale of two sailors in 1842 jumping their ship on a Pacific island among cannibals. Most Dangerous Man Alive, by Dwan, USA, 1961, was the director's last film, about a gangster exposed to atomic radiation and turning into a man of steel with tragic results. Unfortunately, it is not a good film to salute a director who had a great career, which began with silent movies.
MoMA also presented Two Daughters, by Satyajit Ray, India, 1961, two stories about rural India. The first, a short tale, about the arrival of a postmaster in a village, where a very young orphan girl is his housekeeper. He teaches her to read and write, but soon leaves causing her sadness. The second is about a young man preparing to study law, whose mother insists he marries. She chooses a young lady, but he prefers a beautiful, childish bride. Their marriage and early difficulties are finally resolved in this amusing film.
Ballet in Cinema from Emerging Features presented An Evening with Ekman, Eyal & Behar, Leon and Lightfoot, and John Inger, by the Nederlands Dans Theater 2, from a performance of May 8, 2013. It consisted of four contemporary ballets by the choreographers of the title. All four were imaginative, inventive, and danced very well by a group of young, energetic dancers. They were entitled Studio 2, Dream Play, Sara and Maybe Two, and are unusual, modern pieces, and, in general, quite interesting to watch.
