Off-Broadway, The
Qualms, by Bruce
Norris, at Playwright Horizons, is a well
acted play, directed by Pam
MacKinnon. A
new couple (Jeremy
Shamos and Sarah
Goldberg) are invited to a swinger party by
a host couple (John
Procaccino and Kate
Arrington). Two other couples arrive for the
party. Unfortunately. rather than active sexual
activity, the party develops into a lot of talk
about morality and other mundane topics.
Significant Other, by Joshua
Harmon, at Laura Pels Theatre, is about a
gay man, and his three female friends. He is
lonely, and fantasizes about a handsome young
man. When all three girlfriends marry, he
becomes even more lonely. The acting is fine,
under Trip
Cullman's direction, but the play is
underwhelming.
The Inside Broadway: 2015 Broadway Beacon
Awards honored Renee
Fleming, Tony
Danza and Joseph
Volpe with

JW Marriott Essex House. It was a delicious and
delightful event, and the three honorees
deserved their awards.

The 5th Annual Off Broadway Alliance Awards were
presented at a reception at Sardi's. President Peter
Breger introduced
the speakers and winners, which included Best
musical Hamilton and
Best play Between
Riverside and Crazy. Among the other
honorees was Austin Pendleton as
a Legend of Off Broadway. Lynn
Cohen and Brian
Murray spoke
of the late Marian
Seldes, who was inducted into the Off
Broadway Alliance Hall of Fame, with Arthur
Gelb, with words spoken by his widow Barbara
Geld. It was a fine event.
American Ballet Theatre (ABT) presented Romeo
and Juliet, choreography by Sir
Kenneth MacMillan, music by Sergei
Prokofiev. It was a superb performance,
starring James
Whiteside as
Romeo and Gillian
Murphy as
Juliet. They danced magnificently, and were the
perfect romantic couple. The production is
splendid. However, a word must be added for the
marvelous performance by Arron
Scott as
Mercutio. He gave a sensational performance,
especially in the second act in the Mandolin
Dance. His skill and technique were a joy to
watch. It was another memorable matinee at the
ballet.
Black Tie Magazine invited us to a Kick-Off
Cocktail party at the Delegates Dining Room at
the United Nations for 2015
Rhythms of One World Choral Festival June 25-30.
While enjoying the view of the East River, we
drank delicious wines and ate scrumptious hors
d'oeuvres. Among the speakers were Alice
Liu of
American Oriental Arts Foundation and Her
Excellency Ambassador Simona Miculescu of
the Permanent Mission of Romania. Concerts will
be given in the UN General Assembly Hall and at
Alice Tully Hall. The Jazz Forum Arts Quartet
performed. It was a lovely event.
