Lolita,
My Love ,
book and lyrics by Alan
Jay Lerner, music
by John
Barry ,
is a production of the York Theatre Company as a Musical
in Mufti at the Theatre at Saint Peter's Church. It is
based on the novel Lolita by Vladimir
Nabokov ,
which was considered controversial when it appeared in
the 1950s. The musical based on the novel closed in
Boston in 1971 before its opening in New York. It is
about a pedophile and murderer ( Robert
Sella ),
who has a passion for his stepdaughter ( Caitlin
Cohn ),
(photo below with Robert Sella) a nymphet, a
pubescent girl who is sexually precocious. The thirteen
member cast, directed by Emily
Maltby ,
is quite good, especially the two leading actors
mentioned above. The topic, however, is rather
unpleasant, and again without Loewe as Lerner's partner,
the music does not reach the heights of a My
Fair Lady or
a Gig i.
We congratulated the cast at the opening night party in
he Living Room at Saint Peter's Church.
I went to the home of Penry
Jackson and
his wife to hear a recital by his 15-year-old son Adam
Jackson .
He played works by five composers, Bach, Mozart,
Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Chopin.

I was amazed at his skill and dexterity. He
certainly has the makings of an outstanding
classical pianist. The guests were invited to taste
delicious food and fine wine as we toasted the
talented young man
MoMA is presenting Modern Matinees: B is for
Bacall, Mar 1-Apr 26. I saw To Have and
Have Not, byHoward Hawks, USA, 1944,
starring Humphrey Bogart, as a fisherman
in Martinique. He has a fishing boat that he
rents. An
alcoholic friend is his shipmate,Walter
Brennan. Lauren Bacall, in her film
debut, plays a woman, who finds herself stranded
on the island. Bogart and Bacall fall in love,
off screen as well. She became his fourth wife.
The film is also about anti-fascism in World War
II, in this case Free French against Vichy
French. But what is important is the chemistry
between Bogart and Bacall on screen. It is
wonderful, entertaining, and the dialogue
between them is memorable.
I attended a farewell party for the photo editor
of the New York Post David Boyle (photo
below) at O'Lunney's 145 West 45th St. All
the photographers, reporters and executive staff
came to wish him good luck in the future. I
worked with him for almost 20 years, and I
respected and loved him. He was the finest photo
editor I have ever known. When he came to the
paper from England, I took him and his lovely
wifeKat to cabarets, restaurants and
Broadway shows to introduce them to the United
States. One of the highlights for his wife was
introducing Kat to Liam Neeson at Angus
McIndoe's restaurant.I am deeply saddened by his
departure.
