Love's Labour's Lost ,
by William
Shakespeare ,
directed & adapted by Thomas
G. Waites ,
at Gene Frankel Theatre, made possible by the Jeff Hunter
Charitable Trust Fund, is an updated version with a 14
member cast of energetic young actors,
who sing, play guitars and piano with popular music from
Woodstock. It was an interesting performance.
Tisa Chang, Artistic Producing Director of Pan
Asian Repertory Theatre held an Art & Action Benefit at
Golden Unicorn Restaurant, 18 East Broadway honoring Lu
Yu, (photo below with Grace Chang) Virginia P. Louloudes and Nerou
Cheng. Cocktails and appetizers were followed by a
delicious Traditional Chinese Banquet with entertainment
by Al Son Son Flamenco Troupe. It was a spectacular
evening.
Slave Play, by Jeremy O. Harris, at the
Golden Theatre, has an eight member cast, directed by Robert
O'Hara. It is a two hour intermission-less play. It
begins with three short scenes where interracial couples
act out life in the the antebellum South on plantations.
The second part is an overlong therapy session for the
three couples. It ends with a tour de force scene in the
bedroom of Joaquina Kulakango and Paul
Alexander Nolan. It is a provocative play with
themes of racism and sexual abuse. The scenic design by Clint
Ramos is impressive. The playwright has stated that
he wants to stimulate the audience into to thinking
about slavery and its effect on future generations of
white and black people. He certainly achieved his aim.
