Anyone
looking for the first time at Walter van Oel’s work
experiences a sensorial shock given by the extraordinary
colors. There is no escaping the fascination.
He takes the use of color to a new dimension, both
intrinsically by inventing new tones and extrinsically as
the beholder changes position variations of light multiply
the color effects.
Walter van Oel’s most recent series of paintings go
beyond the traditional opposition of figuration and
abstraction. It is a dialectic of these two opposites.
Depending on the reflecting light and the beholders
position, his work can be percieved as purely ‘abstract
minimalistic’ or as ‘figurative’, like the iconic silhouette
of Marlyn Monroe or a Picasso simulacrum appearing in
the background. As if the tangible fuses the intangible in
the great cosmic whirling of things.
