Three V.I. communities get twin city in
Italy
V.I.
Senator Wayne James and Aurelio Pellegrini,
mayor of Montescudaio, Italy signed a
twin-city agreement between the three
historic towns of the Virgin Islands and the
11th century Tuscan village of Montescudaio.
The official ceremony - the culmination of
the 28th Legislature's passage of James'
resolution establishing the Montescudaio-Virgin
Islands twin-city alliance took place in
Montescudaio's Piazzale del Castello, a
medieval castle. It was attended by almost
all of the town's 2,000 residents,
journalists and a delegation of 13 from the
Virgin Islands. Led by James, the 13-member
delegation included Senate President Louis
Hill; former Miss Virgin Islands Jasmine
Turner; Kathryn de Lugo Houston; Crucian
artist Channel Steinmann Wheeler; and Tony
Gatti, Managing Director of Italian VI
Trading Company.
The delegation was treated to a host of
events between June 30 and July 4, including
a welcoming dinner and fireworks display; a
ceremony where James placed a wreath on a
World War II memorial where 12 American
soldiers fell during the June 30, 1944,
liberation of Montescudaio; a special
meeting with the president of the province
of Pisa and a tour of the leaning Tower of
Pisa.
A new twin-city sign also was unveiled. In
addition to Montescudaio's three other twin
cities, the sign displays Charlotte Amalie,
Christiansted and Frederiksted. Besides
friendship, the basis for the relationship
is commerce: Montescudaio is famous for wine
production, while the Virgin Islands is
renowned for its production of rum.
Romano's Restaurant & Art Gallery's
'Regional Italian Wine Dinner' will feature
the Fontemorsi Tresassi from Montescudaio in
the first course paired with a baked
spaghetti squash with proscuitto, mushrooms,
fresh spinach, served with sauce Genovese.
