Look Out for me
I'll be the ROBOT....
Dr. Jeannie Yi

The China Institute of New York will hold a unique Halloween dance so that our second and third generation Chinese and more than 40 other ethnic groups in New York can have a safe, fashionable and culturally-rich youth and children. A high-end community with an atmosphere where we can make friends, understand, encourage and support each other. As soon as the advertisement came out, New York friends in the Flushing community felt that Manhattan and Flushing are really one family - they have the same roots! It's no longer the one-way street it used to be - Chinatown leads directly to Wall Street. To get back to Chinatown, Wall Street has to go around and around.

Today, the overseas Chinese community in Flushing is preparing to hold the World Chinese Spring Festival Gala. The Chinese American Association, located in lower Manhattan and adjacent to Wall Street, is busy decorating its newly completed smart kitchen that can accommodate 300 people. It is filled with the joy, magic and surprise of the golden autumn season! It is said that there is a large table for crafts in the large restaurant. Friends who do not have makeup or costumes can do crafts around the table and make themselves a unique costume.

It is really not easy to host such an event! Although the venue is free for you to use, you still need to hire a bartender, hire a live band, hire a mixer, hire a host, rent a photo-booth, buy wine, drinks, and props. There are quite a lot of expenses. . Everyone contributes to everyone's affairs. As far as I know, Snow Beer, Moutai Cocktails, and Chinese snacks are all sponsoring, and even gorgeous family and friends are donating money, which is more or less shared. For example, two months ago in the Chinese American Association

For example, Amy spent more than 20,000 US dollars to buy a charming ruby, emerald, blue jade-encrusted necklace personally selected by Ms. Jin Yuxi at the China American Association's "Blue Cloud Award" fund-raising event two months ago. This time I donated again and asked my son Duoduo, who graduated from the New York University Business School, to help promote the event.

China Institute of New York

My girlfriends in Flushing are even more capable of contributing and coming up with ideas. Although we don’t have the money to donate for this event, let’s save a dollar as a token of gratitude! This costume party was originally held for young people - Mingle Friday. The age structure is over 21 years old and under 40 years old. But I have a group of friends around 50 years old, most of whom are single. Most of them are busy on the journey to live a decent life, and they lose their significant other

"We don't have to go to a makeup store to buy costumes. The 99 Mao store has all kinds of goods and materials, and we process them ourselves." said Sister Hong, one of the most active figures in the overseas Chinese community in Flushing. She always takes the lead in supporting and sponsoring various community events. What makes me particularly unforgettable is that after the TV series "Main Street", which reflects the life of the second generation of Flushing Chinese, was completed, we held a celebration at the largest Chinese restaurant in New York - Junhao. Sister Hong received 40 gift packages from a supermarket in Flushing for 40 actors and crew members.

"Everyone contributes to community affairs!" She always says this and does so. Although our actors may only be able to play small roles for big Hollywood actors, money can't buy that kind of seriousness and passion! Four tiger daughters and three tiger mothers started from Main Street, the main thoroughfare in Flushing, and fought all the way to 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Their confusion, helplessness and courage as they fought more and more bravely helped them find their own life in the United States. The road and the ever-cutting roots of China. That's our story. Our story, we tell it ourselves! We can never be like the mermaid in Andersen's fairy tale, using our voice in exchange for a walk on the earth, just because of curiosity? At the cost of our voice, our right to speak, and our narrative language system?

The price is too high!

"Sir, let's design a robot costume quickly!" I said to my husband who was busy frying eggs, toasting bread and making milk tea in the kitchen. After working in a bank all his life, he is now retired and has found the most stable job: cooking for his wife and daughter. Every day he cooked delicious food for us in different ways: from Mao-style braised pork to Spanish barbecue, from vinegar-filled shredded potatoes in his hometown of Chengdu to Idaho mashed potatoes, making us fat. Sometimes he cooks a dish. The TVs on the walls around my central kitchen are no longer CNBC and Bloomberg Asia Markets; the screens are full of beauties and handsome men from various countries teaching you how to cook a certain dish. And when it’s ready, I’ll teach you how to chew it!

It makes people's blood boil!

"Don't be a robot," the gentleman said, sweating profusely. It's hard to imagine that he would be sweating profusely while making an American breakfast. Three cats were wandering around his feet, also waiting for breakfast.

"I want to be a robot!"

In my mind, I just came to the United States in the summer of 1985. In order to let the new foreign students understand the United States and fall in love with the United States, the school gave us the Greyhound orientation program of "7-day tour for US$99" - Greyhound Run America project. How can you say you love America if you don't see and understand it for yourself? Learn from America?

My first stop was directly to Disneyland. Epcot Center Space Space - just completed, I lined up against the sun and finally boarded the "spaceship". When the "spaceship" looks at our earth from "outer space", we see a family on the earth - the father is reading the newspaper after dinner, the mother is reading bedtime stories to the little daughter, and the little son is building a technology tower, a white The robot doll was cleaning the kitchen, and my tears suddenly flowed down. I have just been in the United States for three days, and I don’t understand why the Chinese people have to work so hard just to have enough food for the family? It takes 3 hours to cook a meal, and 2 hours to clean up the messy dishes, not to mention finding a place to earn money, and then going to the vegetable market to bargain to buy these ingredients!

Tear down the central kitchen, sir. We won't cook anymore!" I am really determined to be a robot and cook for everyone tirelessly. Or Uber Eats, giving jobs to young people. Money - it is meant to be earned and spent on the people and things you love.

"That won't do," said the gentleman very seriously. "I was ignorant before and let you cook for more than 30 years. Now, it's my turn to cook. Just think of me as that robot - JJ."

We once said: When you get old, open a coffee shop and name it: JJ Yesterday Sunshine. JJ is the abbreviation of me and my husband.

"OK. Today is the day. Let's find two sets of robot costumes first! There is also a pumpkin mask. Maybe our costumes will win awards!"
