Arts for the Aging Announces
the 22nd Anniversary Benefit Gala
at Washington Golf and Country Club on
October 8, 2010
Dateline - Washington, D.C. - The 22nd
Anniversary Arts for the Aging Benefit Gala will be held on
Friday, October 8, 2010 from 6:45 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at
the Washington Golf and Country Club. The Gala will include
a sit-down dinner, live and silent auctions, and a program
highlighting 22 years of service to older adults throughout
the region. It will feature the presentation of AFTA’s third
honorary Lolo Sarnoff Award to performance
artist and master teacher Jerome Barry for his outstanding
vision and creativity. Dr. Joyce S. Hagel-Silverman and Mrs.
Joan Polk are the Chairs of this year’s Gala. A private
performance for VIPs and sponsors at 6:00 p.m. will precede
the event.
The AFTA Gala draws support from a diversity of
Washingtonians, including public officials, and members of
the congressional, diplomatic, social, arts, and medical
communities. Proceeds from the Gala are for the benefit of
Arts for the Aging’s mission, which promotes the philosophy
that physical and cognitive activity, especially in the
arts, is key to healthy aging. Research shows that the arts
have a positive impact on mental and physical health,
longevity, and the overall quality of life in seniors.
AFTA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization chartered in
Maryland and founded in 1988 by nonagenarian and sculptress
Lolo Sarnoff. It provides a participatory curriculum of
visual, performing, literary and intergenerational arts
outreach programs, as well as cultural outings and museum
visits. AFTA programs give seniors innovative tools to
experience constructive, dignified, positive, and healthful
living. Special outreach is focused on non-profit adult day
care centers and nursing homes serving disadvantaged seniors
living with a broad range of age-related impairments such as
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The diverse AFTA program
underscores an imperative mission to enhance the quality of
life of the fastest growing age-group in the U.S. today --
seniors.
