Delray Beach Proclaims
January 18-23 as
Delray Beach Poetry Week
In honor of 6th annual
PALM BEACH POETRY FESTIVAL
|
Miles Coon,
Director of the
Palm Beach
Poetry Festival
(PBPF), accepted a proclamation
last night from Delray Beach
Mayor Nelson
S. "Woodie" McDuffie
declaring January 18-23 as
Delray Beach
Poetry Week.
Returning to Old School Square in Delray
Beach for six days (January 18-23), Coon
says that the upcoming Palm Beach Poetry
Festival will:
+ Present 12 award-winning poets from all
over the world, including Mary
Cornish, Stephen Dobyns, Carolyn Forché,
Andrea Gibson, Jay Hopler, Marie Howe, Ilya
Kaminsky, Thomas Lux, Anis Mojgani, Sidney
Wade, David Wojahn & Kevin Young.
+ Welcome a record number of participating
poets, including 96 workshop attendees and
11 auditors, coming from 25 different states
and three foreign countries.
+ Offer nine ticketed and two free poetry
events, more than ever before.
+ Spotlight the winners of PBPF’s annual
High School Poetry Contest, selected from
454 submissions from local students, the
most ever received.
+ Give more scholarship grants to poets in
financial need, with a higher combined
value, than ever before in the festival’s
history
“I’m very pleased about the positive
economic impact that the 6th annual Palm
Beach Poetry Festival will make in Delray
Beach and throughout the country because 72
percent of our participating poets and
attendees hail from outside of Florida,”
said Coon.
“In addition to serving the writing
community through our professional
workshops, the annual Palm Beach Poetry
Festival also offers numerous
opportunities for the public to hear
truly great poetry, written from and for
our time, read by poets who engage and
enthrall the audience,” added Coon.
“They are a diverse group, ethnically,
demographically and aesthetically. When
people hear them, they will hear America
singing.”
