New York Celebrates Scottish-American
Heritage
April 2 to 10, a full week of events,
topped off with a parade
|
The National Tartan Day New York
Committee invites all New
Yorkers to join in
celebrating the 12th
Annual Tartan Week, from April 2rd
to 10th.
"On
April 2, a new exhibition entitled, 'Scotland's Gift' opens at the Ellis Island
Immigration Museum reflecting the contributions of the Scottish people."
On April 3rd, the 10k
Scotland Run takes place in
Central Park. Over 7,000 people
completed the run last year. On
Ellis Island, two days of
festivities and pagentry will be
taking place reflecting Scottish
immigrant history.
Monday April 5th,
Tartan Week continues down in
Lower Manhattan with an evening
of Scottish music from Stone
Street to the East River.
The evening begins at 6pm with a
concert in the British Garden at
Hanover Square featuring New
York-based McTalla Mor,
Edinburgh’s A Whisky Kiss
“unplugged”, and Laura McGhee,
rock violinist from Glasgow,
together with the New York
Scottish Pipes & Drums. The
music continues along the
cobbled way of Stone Street,
with performances at Ullysees
and Becketts.
There are diverse events
throughout the week, ranging
from the Dressed to Kilt fashion
extravaganza to A Whisky Live,
from the Adam Smith Business
Forum, to the Harry Benson photo
exhibit, to the Pre-Parade
Ceilidh, topped off by the
Parade - there are events for
all.
On Saturday April 10th,
the day begins at 10am with the
Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan, a
Scottish-American
non-denominational church
service which includes the
blessing of tartan flags.
The thrilling sound of bagpipes
brings the 12th Annual Tartan
Day Parade to the Avenue of the
Americas (6th
Avenue) at 2pm. Alex Fergusson,
Presiding Officer of the
Scottish Parliament, is this
year’s Grand Marshal. The parade
goes from 45th Street
to 55th Street.
Thousands of pipers, drummers,
and members of Scottish clans
and societies, are joined by the
biggest pack of wee Scotties and
Westies in any parade. New York
will be awash in tartan and
kilts as Scottish Americans
celebrate their heritage and
friendship.
