On Thursday, May 6, 2010, the Yonkers
PAL is planning its Annual Sports Dinner at the PAL
Building (The Iris and Martin Walshin PAL Building)
at 127 North Broadway, in Yonkers, New York. Mayor
Phil Amicone has graciously consented to be the
Honorary Chairman of this event. Our “Best Pal”
will be Darryl Strawberry, former New York Mets and
Yankees Superstar. We are also honoring one of our
long-time board members, James (Jimmy) Vetrano for
his dedication and contribution to the PAL for over
twenty years. We have invited many sports
personalities and other celebrities such as Ron
Darling, Rusty Staub, Lee Mazzilli, John Franco, O.J.
Anderson, George Martin, Carl Banks, John Starks,
Ed Kranepool, Howard Johnson, Rick Cerone and Mookie Wilson,
subject to their availability and commitments. A
portion of the net proceeds will be allocated to a
scholarship fund to provide scholarships for PAL
youngsters participating in the program who will be
attending college after graduation.
Our theme for this event is “SAVE THE PAL”. Due to
budget cuts the City of Yonkers no longer assigns
members of the Yonkers Police Department to service
the PAL. We are keeping our doors open through the
efforts of volunteers, including retired police
officers and members of our Board who generously
devote their time to this effort.
We are proud that this event is being
held in our facility located at 127 North Broadway,
Yonkers, New York, aformer New York State Armory,
which we lease from the city. Over the past several
years, PAL has invested over $1 million in
renovating and restoring the facility. We are able
to continue our service to the community through the
assistance of businesses and individuals who have
made a commitment to the PAL.
The Police Athletic League of Yonkers
Foundation Inc. is a 501C not-for-profit
organization, which provides programs and activities
for the youth of Yonkers on a daily basis. Every
day during the year an average of 400 young men and
women are actively participating in our programs.
Many of our participants come from disadvantaged
neighborhoods and are considered at risk. In many
instances, we are able to identify those children at
risk through the assistance and cooperation of the
Youth Services Division of the Yonkers Police
Department
