YoungArts, the core program of the National
Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and seven of
its Miami-based alumni will be featured in the HBO
series MasterClass, directed and produced by
documentary filmmaking team Kirk Simon and Karen
Goodman. The series, premiering April 18,
tells the story of nine world-class creative artists
sharing their art and life experience with YoungArts
students who represent the best of a new generation
of talented artists in America. Dancers Melissa
Fernandez, Ernest Baker II and Gentry George are
featured in the master classes of Jacques D'Amboise
and Bill T. Jones, while Visual Artists Cathryn
Garcia-Menocal, James Sprang and Sheena Klimoski are
featured in the master classes of Frank Gehry and
Olafur Eliasson.
Over
the past 29 years, YoungArts has been dedicated to
identifying
and supporting talented young artists in the
literary, performing and visual arts, providing them
with access to top-notch artistic training,
including Master Classes with some of the most
important artists of our time. The series features
YoungArts Master Teachers Placido Domingo, Liv
Ullmann, Frank Gehry, Bill T. Jones, Michael Tilson
Thomas, Olafur Eliasson, Edward Albee, Jacques
D'Amboise and Julian Schnabel. Each episode of
MasterClass highlights the importance of
mentorship and the significant impact it has on the
lives and career development of young artists. It
playfully yet powerfully depicts a new generation of
artists who are given the unique opportunity to meet
and work with legends in the fields where they
aspire to become legends themselves.
MasterClass
is produced and directed by award-winning
documentary filmmakers Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon,
who also serve on the Board of Trustees for
YoungArts. Simon and Goodman's work has garnered
four Oscar nominations, many Emmys and the duPont-Columbia
Award for Independent Programming. The first episode
of MasterClass airs April 18 at 5:30 p.m.
on HBO.
