Background:
For 25 years, the Institute for Community
Living (ICL) has been offering people with psychiatric
disabilities the opportunity to lead productive, fulfilling
lives within New York City communities. ICL began in 1986 as
a product of a doctoral dissertation in Clinical Psychology
at Rutgers University by Dr. Peter C. Campanelli, who
continues to be our CEO, President and visionary. Through an
array of over 100 innovative and award-winning services in
Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Montgomery
County, Pennsylvania, ICL assists over 9,000 adults,
children and families.
ICL keeps raising the bar
of what is possible for people with significant behavioral
challenges and disabilities. Every minute of
every day ICL empowers people
who would otherwise live
on the margins of society, creating
accessible and attainable possibilities.
With evidence-based and best practice
treatment and pioneering rehabilitation programs, ICL has
created a variety of doorways for these individuals to
re-enter the mainstream of life. Ranging from a shelter in
Queens for 243 veterans of the armed services and a women’s
shelter in Brooklyn to over 1,400 housing units and a
comprehensive system of clinical treatment options, its team
of professionals is able to reach people where they are
currently at to help them attain destinations they didn’t
know was possible.
ICL realizes that there are always new
challenges leading to more effective outcomes for people
with serious mental illness and that understanding drives
the innovations found throughout the agency. Among the many
awards the agency has won, included is a SAMHSA Science to
Service award. Underlying all of our programs and
dedication is the goal to assist people with mental and
developmental disabilities who
would otherwise live on
the margins of society through opportunities
to improve their quality of life and to participate in
community living by providing high quality services and
support. We see it as our role to empower each person to
achieve his or her life’s goals and integrate into the
community to the fullest extent possible.
