Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s Sixth Annual Kite Fly Signals
Start Of Another Hamptons Summer
Brings Families Together to Fight Lung Cancer
Southampton, NY
–
This Memorial Day weekend, Uniting
Against Lung Cancer will host its annual “Kites for a
Cure®,” a family kite fly to benefit lung cancer research on
Saturday, May 26th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. (rain date
May 27th) at Cooper’s Beach in Southampton. Over
1,000 kite flyers and lung cancer supporters are anticipated
at the event, now in its sixth year.
“The
Village of Southampton looks forward to the “Kites for a
Cure” event each Memorial Day weekend,” said Mark Epley,
Mayor of the Village of Southampton. “Everyone in attendance
brings with them a hopeful spirit which is a source of
comfort to those who have lost a loved one to the disease,
or uplifts those currently suffering from lung cancer.” The
event hits home for the Mayor, an Honorary Commodore of the
event, who lost his father to lung cancer eight years ago.
Last
May, nearly 1,000 people gathered on one of America’s most
beautiful beaches, armed with kites bearing pictures and
messages of remembrance and love for their family and
friends. Uniting Against Lung Cancer was able to raise
$50,000 in support of its mission of funding innovative lung
cancer research.
“Kites for a Cure” is the most affordable family fundraiser
in the Hamptons this summer. For a $30 donation at the event
or online, guests will receive a high-quality kite which can
be decorated on site with drawings, names, wishes, or
messages to be flown in the sky over the ocean. A $300
donation covers a family of up to five flyers. All proceeds
will go to Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s national lung
cancer research grant program.
“Kites for a Cure is a wonderful event in that it gives
families the opportunity to come together on beautiful
Cooper’s Beach to honor those affected by the disease,” said
Linda Wenger, executive director of Uniting Against Lung
Cancer.
Uniting Against Lung Cancer was founded in 2001 in memory of
Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident and non-smoker who
lost her battle with lung cancer. In just nine years, the
foundation has awarded more than $8 million in research
grants to find a cure for the disease that will claim an
estimated 160,000 lives in the U.S. this year.
Lung
cancer will kill more Americans this year than colon,
breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers combined, and more
women than breast, uterine and ovarian cancers combined. Yet
it receives less federal research funding per death than any
of the other major cancers.
Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC), a 501 (c) (3)
organization headquartered in New York, is dedicated to
finding a cure for lung cancer by providing funding for
innovative research, and to raising awareness of the
nation’s #1 cancer killer. For more information, please
