On August 25th
from 7 - 10 pm at the private Southampton home of Avis
and Bruce Richards, Tom
Colicchio & Lori Silverbush, Jon Bon Jovi & Dorothea
Hurley, Susan Burden and Avis & Bruce Richards will
host the
United Way of New York City's (UWNYC) "What's
On The Table?" fundraiser. Event proceeds directly
benefit efforts to ensure that all poor and low-income
New Yorkers are able to access healthy, nutritious food.
This
second annual
event will feature delicious food from chef
Tom Colicchio's restaurants to underscore
the need for all people to be able to eat
nutritious food, regardless of their income.
Renowned jazz bassist, Ron Carter will
perform throughout the evening.
Last year,
high profile attendees included Julianne
Moore and director/producer Bart
Freundlich, Christy Turlington, Vanity
Fair publisher Edward Menicheschi,
ICM head Esther Newberg and CFDA
founder Fern Mallis. This year's host
committee includes FEED founder Lauren
Bush Lauren, CNN anchor Alina Cho,
and chef Katie Lee, among others.
UWNYC has
long been a leader in the fight against
hunger in New York City. In 2011, it
commissioned a hunger survey whose results
were startling:
· In
the last 12 months….
· Two
in five (38%) of
New Yorkers say they or a family member bought
less healthy foods because they were cheaper
than buying fresh foods.
· 36% of
New Yorkers say they or a family member had
difficulty paying for food or groceries.
· 33% of
New Yorkers say they or a family member chose
between paying for food and rent or some other
household expense.
· Just
over one in ten (13%) say
they or a family member received food from a
food pantry.
Everyone
involved in "What's On The Table?" is
committed to reversing these numbers. Tom
Colicchio and Jon Bon Jovi in particular
have long been anti-hunger activists.
Colicchio and his wife, filmmaker Lori
Silverbush, have partnered to make a
documentary about the issue called Hungry in
America to be released later this year. Bon
Jovi founded a community restaurant, Soul
Kitchen, in Red Bank, New Jersey which
allows people to pay what they can afford.
If customers can not pay at all, there are
welcome to volunteer to work in exchange for
their family's meal.
