The Anne Frank
Center USA will hold its 17th
Annual Spirit of Anne Frank Awards, on Wednesday, June 12,
2013, 6:30pm, commemorating Anne Frank’s 84th
birthday, and honoring outstanding individuals who best
represent her ideals in scholarship and life actions.
The gala, held at
ESPACE in New York City, includes a reception, silent
auction, dinner and awards event recognizing worthy
students, educators and citizens who work to promote
justice, equality, and mutual respect among diverse groups.
Proceeds from the event will
support the Center’s expanded programming in its new
location, at 44 Park Place, in Lower Manhattan.
The Distinguished
Advocate Award will go to Peter and Elisa
Rapaport, long-time supporters of The Anne Frank Center
USA and similar community-oriented organizations, for their
steadfast commitment to education, volunteerism, and their
stewardship of the Red Cross, The Anne Frank Center USA, the
National Parks Foundation, and the American Folk Art Museum.
The Rapaports have shown great passion for community
betterment and for helping those in need.
The Human
Writes Award will be given to acclaimed author
Steve Berry, known for his historical novels. A passion
for history led Mr. Berry and his wife Elizabeth to create
History Matters, a foundation dedicated to historic
preservation. Mr. Berry has received the Barnes & Noble
Writers for Writers Award and the International Thriller
Writers Silver Bullet Award. Mr. Berry’s devotion to
preservation was recognized by the American Library
Association, which named him the first spokesman for
National Preservation Week, a role he continues in 2013.
The $10,000 Leah
and Ed Frankel Support Scholarship Award
will be presented to Julia Joy McBee of Jupiter, Florida,
for her nonstop advocacy work to prevent human trafficking,
and for the instrumental role she played in efforts to lobby
Florida to pass laws against such cruelty.
Outstanding
Student Awards of $1000 will go to
Kathryn Butler of Plymouth, Michigan, for her leading
role in building a national movement for anti-bullying laws,
and to Janet Chen of Broomfield, Colorado, for being
a strong and influential activist for teen suicide
prevention.
The 2013
Outstanding Educator Award will be
given to Meghan McNeeley, an English/Language Arts
teacher at Clarke Middle School in Athens, Georgia,
for her commitment to teaching tolerance, including the
creation and implementation of a Holocaust studies
curriculum.
The Spirit of Anne
Frank Awards, with music by The
Jazz Museum in Harlem All Stars, begins at 6:30 p.m.,
Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at ESPACE, located at 635
