The New York Choral Society will celebrate its 56th anniversary with a
Spring Gala on MARCH 12 at the Metropolitan Club, 1 East
60th Street, NYC. The Gala will feature performances by
renowned opera soprano, Eglise Gutiérrez; Lindemann Young
Artist and bass, Sava Vemić; and mezzo-soprano, Ewa Płonka.
The Gala will also celebrate Judith A. Rubin’s 50th year as
a member of the New York Choral Society. The cocktail
reception will begin at 6:00 PM, followed by a seated dinner
and award ceremony at 7:00 PM. Afterward, guests are invited
to enjoy a dessert reception. The evening will also feature
a silent auction of items generously donated by friends and
patrons of the New York Choral Society.
Performers Eglise Gutiérrez, Soprano Born in Holguin, Cuba, American
soprano Eglise Gutiérrez has been named by Opera News as
“one of opera’s next wave” (August 2012) She has sung in
some of the most prestigious venues of the world, including
Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, Wexford Festival, Rome, Zurich,
Trieste, Florence, Cagliari, Carnegie Hall, Savonlinna,
Berlin, Bellas Artes (Mexico), Tel Aviv, Hamburg, Athens, La
Monnaie, Brussels, the Santa Fe Festival, Cincinnati Opera,
Florida Grand Opera, Washington Concert Opera, Caramoor
Festival, L'Opéra Comique and the Seattle Opera in roles
such as Lucia, Gilda, Elvira in I Puritani, Violetta, Amina,
Lakme, Maria di Rohan, and Elvire in La muette de Portici.
Ms. Gutiérrez graduated from The Institute Superior of Art
in Cuba (Suma Cum Laude) and from The Academy of Vocal Arts
in Philadelphia. She made her Carnegie Hall début as soprano
soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and John Rutter’s Requiem under
the baton of John Rutter in May 2004, after completing her
final year at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.
During her studies there, she performed several leading
roles; among them the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor,
Amina in Bellini’s La sonnambula, Nanetta in Falstaff, and
Adina in L’elisir d’amore. Additional roles in her
repertoire include Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, and the
title roles in Roig’s Cecilia Valdés and Vives’ Doña
Francisquita with Pro Arte Gratelli.Sava Vemić, Bass Sava
Vemić, bass, comes from Belgrade, Serbia. He is a member of
The Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development
Program in the season 2014/2015. He studied singing in the
Music School Mokranjac with prof. Tanja Obrenović and later
at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade with
prof. Nikola Mijailović. In Mozart’s Magic flute he made his
debut as Sarastro at the opera stage of Madlenianum Opera &
Theatre in Belgrade. He received scholarships from the
International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI) in 2013 when he
sang Bartolo in an IVAI production of Le nozze di Figaro and
in July 2014 when he sang Osmin in their production of Die
Entführung aus dem Serial in Tel Aviv, Israel. In June 2014
he made his Carnegie Hall debut as Sir Walter Raleigh in
Donizetti’s opera Roberto Devereux with The Opera Orchestra
of New York led by Mo. Queler. In 2012 he performed at the
Esterhazy festival in Haydnsaal, Austria. During his
education he was awarded with several prizes: 1st Prize
Award at the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition,
New York, 2014; Danica Mastilović’s Award for the best
student of solo-singing department at the University of Arts
in Belgrade, 2014; Publikumspreis der Stadt Beeskow in the
frame of the international Opera Course Oper Oder-Spree,
Germany, 2011; 1st Prize at the sixth Solo Singers
Competition Lazar Jovanović, Serbia, 2008. Ewa Płonka,
Mezzo-Soprano Mezzo soprano Ewa Płonka, originally from
Poland, is equally talented as a pianist and singer. She
obtained her Bachelor’s and first Master’s Degree in Piano
Performance at The Academy of Music in Poznań/Poland. Her
second Master’s Degree was earned from Oklahoma City
University and her Doctoral Degree from The University of
Utah both in Piano Performance. Ewa Płonka began studies at
The Juilliard School in the fall 2014 in Artist Diploma in
Opera Studies. During the summer 2014 Ewa gave several vocal
recitals with the piano in Poland and concerts with
orchestra in Germany, as she was awarded full scholarship in
the 2014 Internationale Meistersinger Akademie in Nürnberg.
THE NEW YORK CHORAL SOCIETY The New York Choral Society (NYCHORAL),
founded in 1958, has become known by audiences and critics
for the quality of its performances and the diversity of its
repertoire, which encompasses well-known choral masterworks
as well as many compositions rarely heard in concert halls.
The 175-voice symphonic chorus has been widely recognized
for its outstanding performances at prestigious music venues
around the world. For more than half a century NYCHORAL has
enriched the cultural life of the New York community by
performing a rich variety of choral music from classic to
contemporary pieces, including newly commissioned works, to
some 10,000 people per year; and by fostering interest and
participation in choral music through education and
community outreach, especially to children. Since 1984 the
singers of NYCHORAL have also served as “ambassadors of
music” abroad, with concert tours to Italy, Austria, China,
France, Israel, Mexico, Croatia, Greece, and the Czech
Republic. In 2014, NYCHORAL toured Central Europe and
performed in a high mass in St. Stephens Cathedral, Vienna,
in Mátyás-templom, Budapest, and at Banffy Castle in
Romania.
