What
The First Annual “A Celebration of Service” will engage the
Greek Letter organizations termed as “The Divine Nine” in a
showcase of the service they provide in communities around
the country and the world. “A Celebration of Service” will
culminate in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, December 15, 2018
at the Mercedes Benz Stadium during the ESPN owned
Celebration Bowl, beginning at 12 noon, and televised
nationally on ABC. Rank and file members of each
organization will be asked to converge on Atlanta as a show
of togetherness in a spirit of celebrating service.
Why
The purpose of this initiative is to highlight the
tremendous contributions, and impact the Divine Nine
organizations are making. It will provide a platform to
shape the narrative of what these organizations, through
their members, do and their relevance to the African
American community.
Service Counts
Anyone associated with the Divine Nine organizations knows
that their principle existence is to provide services that
improve communities. They are an essential part of the
African American experience beginning in colleges and
universities around the country and continuing throughout
the lifetime of the members. The partnership with ESPN
provides the media platform to show case their cause and
shape the narrative of service verses one of Step Shows.
Who We Are
The platform will highlight key members of the Divine Nine
organizations. By doing so, it will reflect the important
leadership roles that each organization’s members have
played throughout their existence. Content stories will be
developed and featured on ESPN content platforms.
Road to “A Celebration of Service”
With service at it’s core, “A Celebration of Service” will
kickoff in Atlanta, Georgia on September 1, 2018 with a
joint service project coordinated by the Atlanta area Divine
Nine chapters. ESPN will have a camera crew and additional
digital content platforms on site to chronicle the work and
showcase that footage during the national broadcast of the
MEAC SWAC Challenge on an ESPN network September 2, 2018.
During the game local chapters will bring youth they serve
through their programs and wear their organization’s
paraphilia as part of the showcase of their service work.
They will be featured during the game and telecast. During
the football season this process will be replicated up to
four additional times in various cities during ESPN
televised MEAC and SWAC games. The culmination of “A
Celebration of Service” occurs during the Celebration Bowl
December 15, 2018, televised on ABC. The focus will be the
global impacts of each organization. National leaders of
each Divine Nine organization will be at the center of the
presentation and showcase.
One Goal
The significance, extent, and impact of the service provided
by the Divine Nine organizations and their members will be
the cornerstone of this annual initiative. The focus will be
on changing the narrative and educating the country about
the scope and work of the respective organizations through
their members.
Final “A Celebration of Service” Initiative
In partnership with the Divine Nine organizations and the
Celebration Bowl on December 15, 2018 fans that attend the
game will be asked to bring canned goods for collection and
donation to the Hosea Helps organization. Collection
receptacles will be placed at strategic entry locations to
Mercedes Benz Stadium for food drop off. See the link for
information Hosea Helps.

It will also be recommended that during the actual Christmas
feeding members of the local Divine Nine chapters
participate wearing their organization paraphernalia. Local
media will be engaged to cover the event.
Leadership
A committee comprised of representatives from each Divine
Nine organization will work with the Executive Director of
the Celebration Bowl and MEAC SWAC Challenge/ESPN. These
individuals will serve as an extension of the Bowl and
Challenge Advisory Board. These individuals will represent
their organization in all planning and coordination of the
“A Celebration of Service” activities.
Summary
“A Celebration of Service” is the first initiative of its
kind to feature the service aspects of all the Divine Nine
organizations on a national media platform. In doing so, the
media value to each organization will provide invaluable
resource to leverage in continuing each organization’s
important work of service.
