Bob Mackie,
the legendary costume designer was guest
of honor at the Museum
of Arts and Design (MAD)
benefit brunch last Saturday hosted by
MAD Chair Michele
Cohen,
MAD Director Tim
Rodgers and
an honorary Committee of Nicole
Miller, Anna Sui, Kay Unger, and
Machine Dazzle.
Mackie in conversation
with MAD Curator Barbara
Paris Gifford told
the audience, “I’ve designed more Barbie
outfits than anyone else; more than 60.
Among the things I love about working
with her is that she never complains if
you stick a pin in her!” Some of those
designs are on display in MAD's current
exhibition, Barbie:
A Cultural Icon (on
view until March 16, 2025).
Mackie produced tens of
thousands of costumes for Cher and Carol
Burnett.
“Even the most elaborate garbs were made
in only a week's time. Sketched Sunday,
discussed in Monday’s meeting, filmed
Friday”. All this and more is detailed
in his new documentary Bob
Mackie: Naked Illusion and
book The
Art of Bob Mackie.
Guests included CeCe
Black, Sharon Bush, Lucia Hwong Gordon,
Jana Jaffe, Sharon King Hoge, Marilyn
Kirschner, William Ivey Long, Vanessa
