New York City - The
Permanent Memorial Committee, in association with
the African Union and the United Nations Office for
Partnerships (UNOP), hosted a reception in support
of the Permanent Memorial
at the United Nations to
Honor the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic
Slave Trade. The event took place at the Ana Tzarev
Gallery in New York, which generously provided its
venue for
the cause.
The event coincided with the exhibition, Grace of
Africa, a
retrospective of Ana Tzarev paintings inspired by
her travels in
Africa. In support of the Permanent Memorial, the
Ana Tzarev Gallery
produced 75 limited edition reproductions of Ms.
Tzarev’s painting
“Girl from Akra”. The proceeds raised from the sale
of these
reproductions will support the Permanent Memorial
project.
Mr. Amir Dossal, Executive Director of UNOP;
Ambassador Raymond O. Wolfe, Jamaica’s Permanent
Representative to the United Nations and Chairman of
the Permanent Memorial Committee; and Mr. Russell
Simmons, Goodwill Ambassador for the Permanent
Memorial, made welcoming remarks and spoke on the
deep significance of the Initiative, which aims to
re-engage the attention of the International
Community on the horrific nature of slavery and the
trans-Atlantic slave trade.
