United Stress Disorders Association Objectives
|
“It has often been said
that we live in an age of anxiety, this despite
the fact that the standard of living of the population of the developed
world is at a level never before attained. Given the
fact that famine and pestilence have been largely
overcome in the industrialized world, it is strange
that anxiety is so prevalent. That is not to say
that developed societies are free of illnesses, but
epidemics of the past wiped out large portions of
the population where today this is now rare.
However, even with these apparent accomplishments,
some 20 million American adults live with an anxiety
disorder that is chronic, painful and which can
become progressively worse. We can speculate that
evolution has prepared us for starvation and
pestilence, but it has not prepared us for the
stresses of contemporary modern life. The stresses
we face today are the results of a complex
environment and culture. Stresses such as
overcrowding, competitiveness and the loss of
communal supports may well contribute to why so many
people suffer from anxiety.” Robert Cancro, MD
Director of the International Committee Against
Mental Illness and Chairman Emeritus of NYU
Langone’s Department of Psychiatry |
The incidence of anxiety
disorders, including PTSD, has reached epidemic
levels. Many people suffer from PTSD due to
traumatic experiences including war, terrorism,
natural disasters, domestic abuse, among others. The
United Stress Disorders Association recognizes the
need to intervene since the incidence of PTSD has
grown exponentially around the world. People need to
be educated as to the symptoms of PTSD and other
anxiety disorders so they will know if they or a
loved one should pursue treatment. How can you get
better if you don’t realize you have a treatable
problem? The United Stress Disorders Association
(USDA), division of ICAMI, has been created to raise
awareness of anxiety disorders, for those who
suffer, and direct them effectively on the road to
recovery. |
The Association expects
to pursue
several
initiatives:
|
*
Education and Prevention:
According to the World
Health Organization, four out of the five
leading
causes of disability days in the world are
psychiatric in nature, including alcoholism,
substance abuse, schizophrenia, and depression, and
the fifth cause is AIDS. AIDS receives more
financial support than all the other four causes
combined! Clearly, the public has to be educated as
to the epidemic level mental illness has reached.
Mental illness must be given the attention it
deserves
since the numbers who suffer from
mental
illnesses
has increased
exponentia |
The Association
for Stress Disorders (ASD) plans to
advocate for mental healthdisorders
using
research,
advocacy and
educational outreach
through press,special
events and film
documentaries. |
*
Advocacy:
A short documentary
(:20 - :30 minutes in length) will be produced on
the topic of anxiety disorders, including PTSD, and
the signs for those who are at risk, for example,
returning veterans, children and spouses from
families of abuse,
the
elderly,
those who experienced
traumatic events out of their control, e.g. 9/11 and
other terrorist acts around the world, natural
disasters, war, etc. As you can imagine the number
of people who have been
effected,
in recent years, is dramatic. Robert Cancro, MD,
Chairman Emeritus of NYU Langone’s Department of
Psychiatry, will
be at the helm of
writing and narrating
this documentary. |
*
Research:
Research will be implemented using
alternative modalities of treatment, e.g. the
cranial stimulator (www.fisherwallace.com),
etc.
The ASD will raise awareness of
non-drug treatment
devices being
utilized for alternative
treatment interventions.
The
ASD has been collaborating with the
Fisher Wallace group for almost two years now and
treatment results with this device have
been very impressive.
Psychopharmacologic treatment would be employed if
necessary.
|
*
Intervention and Recovery:
The pharmaceutical industry has focused exclusively
on the development of medications for the short term
relief of anxiety while not dealing with the
underlying imbalance. We wish to help develop and
test life style changes which can bring the person
back to a better balance, utilizing a variety of
techniques, breathing, meditation, self-hypnosis,
biofeedback, and other holistic medical methods for
relaxation. Studies have been implemented
showing the profoundly positive effect meditation
has on the brain. The
ASD will
not only participate in further research related to
the effectiveness of meditation but inform the
public of its
results |
