ATLANTA, GA (January 12, 2010) –
Better World Books
announces today a partnership with renowned nonprofit
relief organization Feed The Children to deliver
millions of children’s books to families in need. This
is a new initiative for Better World Books, a for-profit
venture that collects and sells new and used books
online, donating a portion of each sale to help fund
literacy causes worldwide.
As a
result of the partnership, Better World Books contribute
high quality surplus books to Feed The Children for
distribution to families unable to purchase books on
their own. The surplus titles will be pulled from the
thousands of titles donated to Better World each year
from libraries and universities making room for new
editions. Initial distribution efforts will include ten
children’s books in each of Feed The Children’s personal
care shipments.
"Literacy
is recognized as one important gateway out of poverty,
and for
many families, literacy is impeded simply by a lack of
access to books,” said Better World Books CEO David
Murphy. “Feed The Children are experts at serving
families in need, and we look forward to working
alongside them to make a difference in the lives of
disadvantaged children.”
The first
stage of the partnership will serve families from Feed
The Children’s Elkhart, Indiana distribution center,
with plans to expand nationwide as the program
develops. As of January 11, 2010, Better World Books
has shipped over 339,221 books for distribution to
underserved families with the help of Feed The
Children.
“Education
is a key component in our effort to help children in
need,” said Erin Carlstrom, Director of Education
Programs at Feed The Children. “Many of the children we
serve have never owned their own books and the
partnership with Better World Books provides a wonderful
opportunity to improve their lives.
