While the pros gear up
for the US Open in Pebble Beach,
eight local amateur golfers tested their own skills
on June 16, 2010, at the CityParks Putting Challenge
finals in the Trump Tower atrium. The participants were
joined by Donald Trump, who kicked off the day with
a ceremonial first putt, and PGA pro Len Mattiace,
who was on hand to assist the amateurs in their
putting. The participants were all winners of the
free, lunchtime putting contests held in
Manhattan
office buildings and three metro-area golf courses
over the past three weeks. Proceeds from sponsors
of the contest benefit CityParks Golf, a free
instructional program which reaches 3,500 urban
youth annually throughout the five boroughs.
The competition
involved players hitting multiple putts from various
locations on the custom-made, Tour Links artificial
green. In the event of a miss, each golfer was
entitled to one “lifeline” each round, by asking PGA
pro Len Mattiace to try to make the putt again.
Amateur golfer, Don Greif, made the most consecutive
putts earned the unofficial title of “New
York City’s Putting Champion”
and won a foursome at Trump National Golf Course.
“We are pleased to
partner with Odyssey Golf, Golf Digest, Tour Links
Putting Greens, The Trump Organization as well as
other Manhattan-based businesses to offer this fun
amateur contest that helps us provide free lessons
for our city’s kids, especially as the world’s tunes
in for the US Open,” says Mike Silverman, Director
of Sports for City Parks Foundation. “Golf is on
the air this time of year, and it’s great time to be
thinking about supporting our next generation of
players”
CityParks Golf
makes the sport accessible, fun and easy for 3,500
boys and girls, ages six to 17, to learn to play
golf at all skill levels. With free lessons and use
of equipment, the program, held in 12 public parks
and on citywide courses, gives kids a chance to
improve their skills and ultimately try out for the
CityParks
Intermediate Program and
Junior Golf Academy–specialized
programs for dedicated young golfers available at
the CityParks
Junior Golf Center in Bay Ridge,
Brooklyn.
Founded in 1989, City Parks Foundation (CPF) is the
