Oscar
statuette

certificate,
plaque

Founded in 1927 by 36 of the
most influential men and
women in the motion picture
industry at the time, the
Academy is an honorary
membership organization
whose ranks now include more
than 6,000 artists and
professionals.
Dedicated to the advancement
of the arts and sciences of
motion pictures, the
Academy’s corporate
management and general
policies are overseen by a
Board of Governors, which
includes representatives
from each of the craft
branches.
Far from the eagerly anticipated and globally televised event it is today, the first Academy Awards ceremony took place out of the public eye during an Academy banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Two hundred seventy people attended the May 16, 1929 dinner in the hotel’s Blossom Room; guest tickets cost $5. It was a long affair filled with speeches, but Academy President Douglas Fairbanks made quick work of handing out the statuettes
