LUNGevity Foundation Creates Inaugural
Lung Cancer PRISM Award
Recognizes television series for effectively portraying lung
cancer challenges
WASHINGTON
(April 27, 2011)
– LUNGevity Foundation is awarding CBS daytime television
series “The Bold and the Beautiful” the inaugural PRISM
LUNGevity Award at the 15th Annual PRISM Awards
presented by the Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. on
Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
The new award
will be given annually to encourage accurate depictions of
lung cancer – its diagnosis, symptoms, effects, and
treatment - in movies and television programs. In 2010,
“The Bold and the Beautiful” introduced a continuing
storyline for the character of Stephanie undergoing
treatments for Stage 4 lung cancer. Emmy award winning
actress Ashley Jones, from “The Bold and the Beautiful” will
present the award on behalf of LUNGevity Foundation.
LUNGevity
Foundation (www.lungevity.org)
is a leading funder of lung cancer research and the nation’s
largest grassroots lung cancer organization. Andrea Stern
Ferris, President of LUNGevity, said: “It is enormously
important that the nation learn about the reality of lung
cancer. Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer
and is one of the least funded. It is a devastating disease
that can afflict anyone, regardless of smoking history,
gender, or ethnicity. The entertainment industry is uniquely
able to help shape perceptions and educate people about lung
cancer. We hope that as more people become aware of the
enormous challenges we face in dealing with lung cancer, we
can attract more resources into funding scientific research.
Two hundred thousand people will have their lives turned
upside down when they are diagnosed with lung cancer this
year. We need to provide answers for them and their
families, and we must offer them hope.”
A magazine
format telecast will air on FX, National Geographic Channel,
ReelzChannel, E! On Demand, and other networks on September
25th, and will be featured at a special Capitol Hill
Showcase in Washington, D.C. Variety and The Hollywood
Reporter are media partners for the PRISM Awards, presented
in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration and the FX Network.
