HONORED
DANIEL
CRAIG & RACHEL WEISZ
Event
Held at Cipriani Wall Street; Also Honored Sallie Krawcheck
(85 Broads) &
DeMaurice F. Smith (NFL Players Association)
On Monday,
April 7th, The
Opportunity Network, a
New York City nonprofit that puts high-achieving, low income
students on the road to top colleges and successful careers,
hosted their seventh annual Night
of Opportunity at
Cipriani Wall Street at 55 Wall Street in New York. This
year, the event honored actors Daniel
Craig and Rachel
Weisz, as
well as former CEO of Merrill Lynch and Smith Barney and
current 85 Broads owner Sallie
Krawcheck, and
NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice
F. Smith.
As New
Yorkers, Craig and Weisz wanted to find a way to give back
to their local community and made a multiyear commitment to
The Opportunity Network. The evening began with a cocktail
reception, followed by seated dinner and a program featuring
heartfelt remarks from all honorees as well as inspiring
speeches from students who have benefited from the program. Night
of Opportunity hosted
725 guests and raised over $1.2 million. With Craig and
Weisz’s participation, and the support of the other
honorees, The Opportunity Network will serve more than 500
students with on-site programs and hundreds more through
partner schools and nonprofit programs.
Founded in
2003 by Brian Weinstein and Jessica Pliska, The Opportunity
Network prepares students for college, introduces them to
career opportunities, facilitates paid summer internships,
trains students in professional etiquette and teaches them
how to build networks. The program works with students for
six years, beginning with their sophomore year of high
school and continuing through their college graduation. One
hundred percent of these students graduate from college,
compared with only ten percent of low- income students
nationwide. Within six months of graduation, eighty-five
percent are admitted to graduate school or find professional
employment.
