Casita
Maria Center for Arts & Education honored DEBORAH
VOIGT at its
Musicale benefit on Tuesday, May 13th at
6:00 pm at the home of Maria Eugenia and William Haseltine
in Manhattan. Casita
Maria is a 80-year old South Bronx-based community arts and
educational organization that presents free, diverse,
contemporary visual and performing arts and education
programming for all ages. The
proceeds from the Musicale will benefit Casita Maria’s Music
Program, founded by Gaetana Enders, a board member of the
organization.
“The mission of
Casita Maria’s music program is to develop a life-long love
of music through music making, music literacy and
performing. Our Musicale Honoree DEBORAH
VOIGT, and our performer, ALEXANDER
ROMANOVSKY, deeply believe in the transformational power
of music in the lives of our youth and we were honored to
have them at this year’s event,” explained Sarah Calderon,
Executive Director at Casita Maria. The
Music Program broadens the horizons for children who lack
the opportunity to experience, learn music and derive the
benefits from such
an education.
DEBORAH
VOIGT received
the first Musicale Award for her outstanding contributions
to music. Voigt is increasingly recognized as one of the
world’s most versatile singers and one of music’s most
endearing personalities. Through her performances and
television appearances, she has distinguished herself
through the singular power and beauty of her voice, as well
as for her captivating stage presence. A leading dramatic
soprano, internationally revered for her performances in the
operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, she is also
celebrated for her portrayals of some of the greatest
heroines of Italian opera. An active recitalist and
performer of Broadway standards and popular songs, Voigt has
an extensive discography, and has given many
enthusiastically received master classes. She also appears
regularly, as both performer and host, in the Metropolitan
Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series, which is transmitted
live to movie theaters across the U.S. and overseas.
The Musicale performer, ALEXANDER
ROMANOVSKY, won the
First Prize in the Busoni competition at the age of 17,
Romanovsky has appeared as soloist with many orchestras,
including the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic,
Mariinsky Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, Filarmonica della
Scala and Tokyo Symphony, performing with conductors Valery
Gergiev, Michael Pletnev, Alan Gilbert, and James Conlon,
among others. A native of Ukraine, Romanovsky is
a frequent recitalist in the music capitals of Europe,
including Amsterdam, London, Milan, Rome, Moscow and
St Petersburg. He is an exclusive recording artist of Decca.
Romanovsky donated his talent for the
Musicale.
The Musicale was supported by Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center,
Bristol Myers-Squibb, and donations from individuals. For
