Marking the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War
and Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, the New-York Historical
Society, in partnership with The
Shapell Manuscript Foundation, presented
the exhibition Lincoln
and the Jews,
on view March 20 through June 7, 2015. Through
several never-before-exhibited original writings
by Lincoln and his Jewish contemporaries, the exhibition
brings to light Lincoln’s little-known relationship with the
Jewish community and its lasting personal and national
implications. The
exhibition is inspired by the publication of Lincoln
and the Jews: A History (Thomas
Dunne Books, March 2015), by
Dr. Jonathan D. Sarna, Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor
of American Jewish History at Brandeis University, and
Benjamin Shapell, founder of The Shapell Manuscript
Foundation.
|
Organized by The Shapell Manuscript Foundation, the
evening reception featured remarks by Rabbi David Wolpe,
Sinai Temple, Los Angeles; Leon Wieseltier, author of Kaddish; and Dr.
Jonathan D. Sarna, co-author of Lincoln
and the Jews: A History. Tours
of the exhibition will be offered throughout the evening. |
